Despite my username, I do play a fretted bass now and again (Rick 4003). I've been intrigued by the Jaguar bass for a little while and now that they are discontinued, I opted to get a lightly used one from eb*y. It should be here Monday and comes with a hard case, which is nice.

I plan to put LaBella Deep Talkin' Bass flats or the new Fender flats (9520, I believe? - I have a similar older set with green silks) on it.

Any oddities about this bass you'd care to share? Seems like it'll take a bit of playing around with the active/passive switching and controls to figure out all the sounds. I'm hoping that the "vintage frets" are a bit smaller than "medium jumbo" frets.

Sorry to ramble; just diggin' the anticipation.

I don't think the Jag bass has vintage frets. I maybe wrong but I don't remember from when I played one.

The active sounds that come out of that bass are many and very cool.

You should have fun with it. I would like to get one myself but I really can't justify buying another bass right now.

The description here: http://www.fender.com/products/search.php?partno=0259505505 indicates that it has vintage frets.

It arrived yesterday; unfortunately, it appears that it underwent some impact during shipping and a couple of the switches are broken. I was able to work out a compromise with the seller, since I knew no monetary amount would be worth the total hassle of filing a shipping damage claim and being without the bass for some uncertain period of time. I found some Fender Japan Jag switches on-line on the cheap and hopefully it will be all fixed up by next week.

From a structural standpoint, it is very tight and feels comfortable in the hands. I like the saddles, which are either the threaded or multi-grooved type that allow for fairly good string-spacing adjustments (these have probably been around for a long time, but neither my 97 Jazz nor my 76 P-bass have them). The tuners aren't great, but I can live with them; maybe they just need a tweak to remove dead spots.

Looking forward to messing with the active/passive.

I've got a 50's P with Vintage frets, and I can tell you the frets on my Jag are definitely larger than vintage. Smaller than the medium jumbo's on my Schecter though.

Its a really fun bass, with a tone to suit any mood. Hope you are able to get yours up and running with no problems!

Paramore bassist Jeremy Davis plays a Jaguar Bass with SCNs, an American Deluxe neck with a fancy inlay in the 12th fret, a Jazz Bass control plate and a 1-ply gold vinyl pickguard.

I don't think I'd put those LaBellas strings on this neck, which is extremely skinny. It has the same dimensions as the GL, which in its initial release had neck-warp/twist problems (which have apparently been resolved). I would go for lower-tension flats, perhaps the new Fender 9050Ls which are entirely different strings than the old 9050 series and lower tension. I find them too bright, though.

There are two notorious problems with the Jaguar electronics, both simple to fix.

The first is that the battery gets slightly isolated contacts due to the stupid way it's (not) connected in the battery box. This gives a nice variety of mysterious problems. Clean the contacts and start over.

The other is isolated shielding in the upper switch cavity, a five minute fix to connect it to the cover plate.

These two fixes get rid of the noise problems people have complained of, at least most of them.

The nice thing about the Jaguar is that you can bypass the active whole mess with one switch.

yeah, i thought Jeremy Davis used a Jag for a while too (I saw them from front row of the pit when they came to San Diego on Sept 18, 2009) but it's actually his CS Jazz. they cut down the lower horn and extended the body and changed the pickguard a bit. He also uses the Samarium jazz pickups. Fender actually has a video up where he talks all about his basses. it's called "Rack Review with Paramore's Jeremy Davis".
if you know of Paramore though, you might know of Forever The Sickest Kids, and Austin Bello uses solely Jaguar basses for them...

I think Jeremy's Jaguar bass uses an HMV bridge. :P

The control plate is covered with a sheet of black vinyl adhesive tape wrapped around the knobs.
