I checked out this bass today and it had for strap buttons, a ferrule with a flat washer and a phillips pan head screw holding it together. The bass is immaculate and the price was fair.

Were these strap buttons stock at one time or have they been swapped out?

Go for it. The Mustang is a good bass.

If you like the short scale, go for it--but short scale bass strings are not always easy to find. Just be aware of that.

Long scale ones may be too long, and the strings may be difficult to load on the posts if they're long scale.

As for the strap knobs, I'm not sure I understand what you're seeing.

My first impression was that they would be swapped out, but when I re-read it, I though you could be describing the real thing. So I'm not sure.

The short scale works well for me as my left wrist only bends to 45 degrees.

The guy at the store said he didn't think it is was a reissue and thats why the strap knobs were that way and I've yet to find a pic of a Mustang with those strap knobs. I'll know more on Monday when I go back. If those aren't original knobs, I've got to wonder if something else has been changed.

This much I do know. It's looks new, it sounded great, MIJ, felt good in my hands and it's $300. Well within my budget.

I went back to the store on Monday only to find out that the price the guy gave me was wrong. It was really $450. I would've felt bad if I got it for $300. My friend who owns the store said the "kid" would have had the balance taken out of his paycheck. I did not buy the guitar.

I'll try to get some pics of the strap buttons.

Seriously, if strap buttons or strap locks are THE deciding factor you need to review why you are interested in the first place.

The Mustang is a unique bass in the first place, even the USA ones.

Short scale and not many pickup mod choices would be my concern.

If there is some reason why you want a short scale bass you can do much worse than a Mustang, even the reissue version.

So, either you like how it plays and sounds or you don't.

In recent reissue models this is a Japanese bass meaning great neck, great tonewoods, passable hardware and electronics that are frankly quite marginal. Seeing as how pickup upgrades are limited, how it plays and sounds out of the box is VERY important.

Given the few pickup upgrades available, how this one plays and sounds is what is important, not the strap attachments which can be easily replaced. Not so easily replaced is the electronics.

If it plays great and sounds good to you, then that is what matters. Easily remedied hardware issues such as strap buttons should be you very last concern.

To answer your question:

All Mustang basses were fitted with standard Fender strap buttons from the factory.

Any strap buttons or washers or strap locks of any kind were retro fitted to the bass.

Mustang basses sound great with their stock pickup, you can get strings online and the short scale is a nice change from long scale basses, IMHO.

If you like it- Go for it.
