Hi, I've got a Fender Bass VI which was made in '67 and I bought it from Denmark St, London in 1970. It is a beauty and I've always used flats on it. However, my favourite strings were black nylon covered Rotosound strings which sadly are no longer manufactured. After many e-mails and phone calls I eventually sourced a friendly and helpful manufacturer who was happy to help me experiment with gauges. I now have the perfect sets for both my Fender Bass VI and my Jaguar Baritone Bass VI (both tuned 1 octave below standard tuning).
The gauges for both guitars are 95-80-60-50-45-30 This set-up is perfect for bass which is what I play. It's also OK for the odd lead line.

The main problem with the Jaguar is the cheap build where Fender have put on a Gibson tail piece which cannot accept the large ball ends of bass strings - What were they thinking???
However the easy way out of this problem is to buy a replacement (keep it in case you need to revert back to manufacturers spec.), It's and easy job to drill out 6mm from the back of the replacement tail piece to accept the large ball ends of standard bass strings. It works! and one wonders why Fender couldn't think of this for themselves.

The helpful manufacturer is PICATO http://www.picato.co.uk/
