Hi, this my first post on the Fender forums, I have a Fender tele bass lefty, the neckplate stamp says its a '74 but the date on the neck is 23 sept '72.

Someone previously had decided to completely butcher the body NOT with a router! so im restoring it back to how it should be. Missing from the bass is the original pickguard, pickup, pots and knobs and bridge cover. I am strugling to find the bits i need in the uk espcially what pup to use so if anyone can point me in the right direction that would be great!

Kind regards

Kev

I will also be posting picture updates of how the bass is coming on. I have just primed the body so it is starting to look a bit better now

That's a great project bass. I'm sure that it is hard to find that original pickup so i would recommend that you use a Dimarzio or EMG humbucker until you can locate an original Tele bass HB PU.

I would love to see what your bass looks like when it is finished.

I own an original '73 Telecaster bass with the big HB pu. It is a very unique sounding bass.

Good ideas from BC.

The original pickups are scarce now. I think as recently as three or four years ago, Guitar Parts Resource listed a Fender replacement pickup! Whenever an original shows up on eBay now they go for more than the bass cost new! About $400 seems to be the going rate on eBay. Patience might pay off and so may visits to vintage guitar shows. Year before last I saw two at one show but I don't know what the prices were because I wasn't in the market. Maybe there is a show coming up near you and it would be worth a look. Here is a link to a good list of guitar shows: http://www.ducksdeluxe.com/ddevents.html

Other replacement ideas would include:

1. The SQUIER Vintage Modified TB Bass has a "Fender Designed TEB 101B Humbucking Pickup" that is pretty close to the original Fender but of course is not exactly the same since it is Asian. It might be possible to order one of the Squier pickups through a Fender dealer. I'd probably look into that. Squier seems to have followed the original Seth Lover design, but I've never compared one side by side to one of the vintage USA pickups. These Squier pickups even have the Fender logo on them like the original, so they at least look pretty close. Good cosmetic copy and probably an affordable fill-in until you can find or afford the real deal. If your local Fender dealer is no help in getting is currently in production Squier part, I suggest calling David Goldenfarb at THE BASS PLACE in Tempe, Arizona at 480-423-1161 or email him at dave@thebassplace.com and maybe he can get you one.

2. The GFS MM Pro Plus- Alnico Music Man style pickup for about $80.

3. Seymour Duncan Alnico SMB 4-A Music Man style for about $85.

4. I've also seen a DARK STAR DS-3N available direct from HAMMON ENGINEERING in one of these. http://www.hammoneng.com/ordering1.htm Hammon pickups are about $200 each. But if you were going to give up on finding an original Fender it would be a sound permanent choice.
