I bought my brand new Fender Jag in February and its now the month of June...I have owned my Jaguar for 5 months with mixed feelings. I went to the store I bought it from to trade it in for another bass. I have all the paperwork , including the service plan I purchsed with it, a case and they offered me only $300!!!! WTF was my question....... The bass has gone from them to my home , back to them several times for set ups and adjustments and back home. Its never played an outside gig. I cant believe its worth $300!!! Why did i buy a fender in the first place if its worth the price of a dean or something like it. Sad very sad indeed

Do not blame Fender.

This is how Music Stores operate. If you buy a guitar/bass for say $1,000.00 the minute you step out the door of that store the value of that guitar/bass drops to $500.00. If you walk right across the street to another Guitar and want to sell that guitar/bass in order for them to make any money on it they will offer you $250.00 to maybe $300.00.

It's sad, but it's the truth.

You would be better off selling it on eBay or CraigsList.

+1

The music store doesn't care if the bass has never been gigged and is in immaculate condition. As soon as you bought it and walked out of the store with it, your NEW bass becomes a USED bass. All new mass produced items depreciate as soon as you buy it and bring it home, Fender guitars included.

If you want a guitar that might hold its value or increase in value, than invest big $$$ in a vintage Fender from the 50's or 60's.

Sell the bass on ebay or craigslist. From a quick scan of craigslist, it looks like Jaguar basses are going for $500- $600. So the guitar store offering you $300 is right in line. Remember the store needs to make a profit, buy low and sell high. Selling gear to a guitar store is a last resort. Good luck!

What you're typically going to get is about 1/3 of the brand new price. The store will probably list it for about 1/2 of the brand new price. I know it's painful, but to get what you perceive to be a fair price, you will have to sell it on Craiglist or ebay or something like that.

Now consider yourself on the other side of the fence. As a buyer, you can sometimes get some great deals this way. I bought a D'Angelico EXL-1 for $600 and a 60s Fender Jazz Bass for $400 from music stores. Both were in mint condition.

If you have any doubts about a guitar that you bought, some of the bigger outlets have a 30 or 45 day return policy, with receipt and all other items that came with it. If you don't know by then that the ax you bought isn't you by that time, oh well. One of those things where you have to make up your mind, to keep it or return it. Five months is a long time to have it and not know, to be honest with you. I've been burned myself over the years, but the store is there to make money, and hopefully satisfy the customer. Not always that easy.

I'm assuming you meant $300 credit on a trade. But if that was a cash offer and they have something else you're interested in, you might ask about a trade. The GC I usually go to will usually give you more credit on an immediate (that day while still in the store) trade than if you want cash or even a use in the future credit.

For instance, one time they offered me $50 for a SoundGear 4 string. It was nearly mint but as the asst manager said, they have to inventory it and sell it. He also said (also mentioned by others) that you'd always be better off selling privately.

If I wanted a store credit, he could give me $75 but I pointed out that I was looking at a much more expensive US J-bass so we negotiated my credit up to $100 "if" I bought the J-bass from him before leaving the store.

The music store has to make a profit on your bass when they sell it. That's why they'll only give you $300 for it.

Sell it on craigslist or eBay instead.

Don't forget too, half of retail (list) is usually wholesale. Meaning, if a given instrument lists for $1K new, the store bought it new from the factory for $500. The "magic number" for discount off of list is usually 30%. So, it would then be sold for $700 new. To buy (back) an instrument used, rule of thumb here is to half the wholesale price. Hence, in this scenario, they'd only offer you $250 and that's premising the instrument is in like new condition. If it isn't mint, the price would be even less, depending on what the store's buyer perceives the condition of the instrument to be in.

The "magic number" for private sale is generally 30% off what the original owner paid for it.

Now if the instrument has been discontinued, most larger dealerships heavily discount the instrument up to as much as 45% in an effort to unload their existing stock of it. It is not looked at as collectible because it was discontinued. Rather, it is now looked at like a pariah. In this case, one will truly get reamed if (s)he ever tried to sell it back to a store, even the one they bought it from.

Needless to say, my comments are based on production instruments, ones with no 'pedigree'.

FWIW, with all things considered, it appears that in all actuality, the store gave you a rather generous buy back price. Obviously, YMMV.

I guess so . Now I need to see what the price would be to upgrade the
pre amp, better ground the instrument and upgrade the pick ups to
Seymore Duncan bassline pickups and switch the bridge when all is said and done, I should of held out for an american Jazz or Precision. $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

Yep, you're definitely going near the $300 mark with these modifications.

I always say to players that it is better to hold out and buy exactly what you want because for example, if you really want something that costs $1K but you settle for something around $700, the next time you have that additional $300 in your hand, you'll feel like kicking yourself in the butt multiple times. This is not only on face value, but because this is probably what it is going to cost now to bring that $700 piece up to where you want it and the worst part is, will you be able to enjoy it after all is said and done?

There is one store that will give you a 100% trade in value on any deal you make with the same store, and that store is Buffalo Brothers in Carlsbad, California.
Check them out via the web and read their terms. Not too shabby IMHO.

As far as doing this at GC or any other retailer, you are faced with the same treatment. Your new bass depreciated more that you thought.
Whenever you buy new, you will take the depreciation hit more thatn they buyer of used equipment.

You could always try listing your Jaguar bass on craigslist and probably get more than 300 bucks for it and then you could take the money and buy what you want.

The One thing with a Fender guitar or bass you get with a new one is the lifetime warranty.

This is not transferable to the second owner, so if you think about it, and yes i know the warranty has holes in it big enough to drive a Mac truck through, but still, you do have the warranty to cover you.

All the comments posted here appear to be sound advice to me.

These were also being sold brand new for about $600 in a clearance from at least one online dealer as recently as a few months ago.

I think if it is noisy, the first thing I'd do is copper shield and star ground it. That will cost about $13 in parts at the most. Might make a big difference and if it doesn't you aren't out much. It certainly won't make it worse.

If doing a pickup/preamp upgrade I would normally suggest upgrading the preamp first before replacing the pickups. However the Jaguar has more switches and pots than any bass I know of with only two pickups, so which aftermarket preamp would even work in the first place and leave all the controls functional is a good question.

Does anyone have a wiring diagram for Jaguar Bass? It isn't in the Fender.Com Support section with the others.

There must have been something you liked about it when you bought it, focus on that.

Star grounding only corrects noise in high-voltage circuits. It's meaningless in an instrument. Ask any EE.

There is also no advantage in shielding with copper over the adhesive-backed HVAC aluminum foil tape that's standard in the industry. All you need is overlap at the seams and everything having contact with common.

The noise source with the Jaguars was discontinuity from common in the painted shielding in the upper cavity, which was a NOTORIOUS problem with these instruments, as was oxidized contact with the battery thanks to a poor design.

These are about a five minute fix.

The active circuit is far from noise-free, but the vast bulk of the noise complaints on the Jaguar are covered with the above fix.
