I saw a cat playing last weekend... he was playing a Fender bass that looked like it had a maple Tele neck (head stock for sure) but with P pickups in the neck position and a J pickup at the bridge.... i would have thought it was a P/J unit except for the Tele head (and i thought the body looked Tele as well).... did they ever make a Tele version with a P/J setup like this? any idea what years?

have a 1995 "Daddy's Home" Fender bass brochure that shows a "Vintage Precision Custom Bass" with P-J pickups.

It looks like a 51 Precision with swamp ash body, maple fretboard, black pickguard, 2 knobs, a vintage style split P pickup and a J pickup in bridge position.

It was listed under the Custom Shop Classics series.

The bass I described in the brochure has a maple fretboard and "Tele" style headstock, just like the '51 Precision bass did. It also had a black pick guard.

Just a guess, but maybe a "bullet bass?" or some version. The body of these are more P bass than Tele but the headstock is pure tele.

Like this? They look cool but I've only seen photos, never one up close.

I don't know if the bass you saw was a modified Telecaster bass, a Precision bass with a neck swap of after market neck or a bullet bass, which are very cool ,
I own two Bullet basses, and they have great necks on them.

So many basses are modified its hard to know what you saw without some good pictures.

Trust me though-If you can think of it, somebody has already done it to a Fender bass.

There is a discussion with pictures of the bass at this link:

That is the bass I mentioned earlier in this topic, I bet this might be the one you saw the guy playing.
