Any recommendations for an adult bass? Not necessarily looking for "the cheapest" but something that is reasonably priced and good quality. Thanks!

I was hoping to get out for under $1,200. I'm usually wary of craigslist but there is a LOT of equipment on there these days. Are there any issues which I should immediately look for or expect to find?

Well you have several options in that price range. I would personally recommend either the standard Jazz Bass (made in Mexico) or the 60s Jazz Bass (also made in Mexico). The standard (cost ~ $400) is a decent, very playable instrument. The 60s Jazz Bass (cost ~ $800) is superb and is a lot closer to the look, feel, and sound of a vintage instrument.

You could do that -or- (assuming you have a separate budget for an amp)for $1200 you could get a brand new American Standard Precision bass. If you need to include an amp in that budget, for $550 or so a brand new made in Mexico Standard Jazz or Precision. Or a Highway One (MIA) J or P bass. at about $800.
As a newbie at this I would reccomend new from a reputable dealer than rather than a used from a private party. Unless you know what to look for, you could get ripped off.

Great advice! My only thought is, if the $1200 is your budget for the bass, get an American Standard, if you decide you don't want to play you should get your money out of it, if not you'll have a great instrument and won't have a collection of all the basses you bought before you decided you were serious.

My collection is quite nice, thank you.

Personal thought and choice was one each Standard Jazz and Standard Precision.

You should be able to do that for $1200, and both are outstanding basses.
