Sadly, I am a musical moron. However, my husband (and children, thank God) are not. I wish to purchase a bass guitar for my husband as a gift. It has been about 20 years since he has played bass, and often bemoans it's loss (although he does still have acoustic and electric).

He prefers to play Blues and Soft Rock. What style of guitar (Precision, Jazz, etc.) would be best suited to his needs?

Thank you for you help.

If your husband's hands are on the small side, he will appreciate the slimmer neck of the Jazz. If he likes that old soul thump, get a Precision!

Thanks for your reply. My husband is 6'2 with big hands and fairly thick, blunt fingers, so it sounds like the Precision might be best for him.

When you say he still haves an acoustic and electric, what does that mean? Guitar? Bass?

How much are you looking to spend?

Does he have an amp, or will he need one also?

What bass(es) did he own before?

Who are some of his influences/idols/favorite players?

He has an acoustic guitar and an electric guitar (an Epiphone Les Paul) at the moment - no bass at all. He does have an amp. I have no idea what Bass he used to own, and can't really ask without giving away the surprise.

He plays regularly, with moderate skill - keen, but no professional. I was thinking of spending around $500 for a second-hand guitar - that seem to be a reasonable price on ebay. The Squier's are usually cheaper than the straight Fender's. Are they lesser quality or just made in different countries? (I've read that the Mexican and Japanese factories produce better guitars than the ones made in China, for example)

His music taste is eclectic - some favourites would be John Lee Hooker, George Thoroughgood, Chris Issak, but also Red Hot Chilli Peppers. Generally, he favours the softer style of music for playing, as he strums mainly in the evenings to relax himself and the children.

If you don't know what to buy him, perhaps a gift certificate to his favorite guitar shop?

Or, ask him to take you there and once you arrive, tell him to pick out his present.

No matter what you do, I'm sure he'll be very happy.

Very true about the gift certificate part, but sometimes an actual gift/bass will have a special sentimental meaning.

Check out the Squier Classic Vibe 60's Precision Bass. Do not let the name Squier, or the country of origin fool you. These are really nicely constructed, good quality, and affordable basses. Everyone seems to rave about them.
The Fiesta Red/Rosewood combo is hawt!
