I don't know much about a 57 P-bass other then they would cost a fortune. There is nothing wrong with a good squier but if you go to a music store and A/B test a squier P-bass vs a modern USA P-Bass you would totally tell the difference both in feel and sound. I did this myself many times before laying out like 800 bucks for a 90s USA. Granted I was in a pro touring band at the time I was using as close to as what they did for the recordings which was also a USA P-Bass. Nothing else sounded quite like it.

Oh yeah, most definitely. I'm curious to see if it is even worth a damn. Sometimes they are and sometimes they aren't. It can be a crap shoot, it seems. I have a Squier Tele Custom that is a pretty decent guitar that suits my purposes (guitar isn't my main instrument, anyhow,) but I had to send back a Squier Bass VI because it was shipped to me with a screwed up neck, that was the fault of the factory, since it never left it's factory box brand new, and I wound up paying a little more money and getting a Schecter Ultra VI, which is a really nice instrument. I also have a Schecter Diamond J bass that is really sweet that is my main ax. I would still like to get a bass in the style of the early Precision, though. It doesn't matter the brand, as long as it plays and sounds good to me, but I have to be realistic about the price, too. As it is, I have at least a grand in debt to pay down because I got a bunch of gear over the past year or so. I got to be careful and take care of that before I even think about anything else. It's still nice to look, though. Of course, that can be dangerous. :P

Well it depends on what you are looking for. For the most part you get what you pay for but not to knock the Squiers. I remember we were in the Guitar Center of Hollywood and they were pushing all these $2,000 plus custom shop teles on us. My friend was not liking the way any of them felt. I pulled a Tele squire affinity off the wall and told him to try it. That is the one he ended up buying and doing some upgrades to it. Go figure. He was ready to spend well over a grand and got what he liked for under $200...granted he probably put another $100 into it on upgrades.

As far as the Schecters they are decent too. I was in a band that had an endorsement from them. I actually wanted to use my P-bass but they were tuned so low it really needed a 5 string. I told them I can't stand 5 strings so they had Schecter modify a 4 string for me for to fit the larger ga of a 5 string and set it up. It worked.

That's the one thing you can always do, upgrade.

True, but you also can't polish a turd they say. As long as the foundation is good though things like electronics and bridges/saddles,nuts, tuners etc can really improve an entry level instrument, and of course a proper setup. Helps us broke dudes get more that way and do it over time as not to wipe us out all at once lol

Pretty neat. It has that "reclaimed" wood look. What kind of wood is that?

Is redwood. Plays nice. The guy that built it for me has made guitars for Clapton, Steppenwolf, Joe Walsh, Megadeath, Scorpions, and a bunch of others. I've got 2 from him and thinking of a third. From a different series this time though. Either the lizard skin or one of the other custom finishes he does. Strat this time though. He bought a bunch of 3000 year old Sequoia from a retired clockmaker - they look nice but out of my price range!

Killer. I have a contractor friend of mine that is interested in making some bodies. He has been collecting exotic woods leftover from some high end jobs. We have enough for at least half a dozen bodies. I have been using him to help me do some mods and repairs and are going to try out making some teles and strats soon. He said he needed a few tools he does not have yet but once we get something going I will post it.

I do however already have a mahogany full size tele body with a 60s cut that has kind of a reclaimed look with a few small knots etc. My plans for that so far is dark stain and a light coat of nitro clear. I have a gold plated vintage bridge, gold plated control plate and a gold plated metal pickguard for it so far. For a neck I want to go rosewood and stain the back and headstock dark to match the body. I can see it in my mind but have so many other projects that it might be months before I even get to it...which is okay since I need to save up for pups and a neck anyhow.

For knobs I am going to use large polished bullet shell casings like the Paoletti wine series teles.

Hey - what happened to the OP?

I had decided that I wanted a slab of mahogany sandwiched between the top and bottom but by time I thought about it was too late. Assuming yours is pretty heavy?

Good luck on the builds! Been following one on Strat board and is more than I would want to take on. Have an old Squier that my son and I are going to redo after parts are collected but from scratch would be beyond me.

That is a good question. I have not weighed it yet. It seems not to much heavier then the Alder Tele bodies I have. If I get a chance tomorrow I will get it on the scale. It still needs edge sanding and a few holes drilled but the main routes are done.
