Ok! Calm down :)

Any idea what sorta music your Bf plays on bass?

Just had a quick look at the Fender Mini Tone Master Amp and it seems more geared towards Guitars. This isn't necessarily a bad thing (especially only for a wee battery powered battery amp). Personally I don't know of any battery powered bass practice amps to recommend but maybe it's worth popping into a music store (a small one where the staff can actually play instruments :p) and asking one of the staff if they could try it out or something? That's if you don't get a better response than this here, of course.

It looks a great wee thing though, wouldn't mind one myself (even just to sit it on my shelf haha).

The Mini Tone Master is a guitar amp, not a bass amp, and sort of a "toy amp" at that. It's a cool thing to have on the shelf in your music room but not an amp that you'd enjoy the sound of, whether for a guitar or a bass, in my opinion.

I would return the Mini TM (unless he likes cool little knick-knacks and collectibles) and get a bass amp with at least an 8" speaker. You'll probably need to spend at least $100 to get anything worth having, unless you buy used.

You can sometimes find Peavey MicroBass and Peavey Minx bass amps used for pretty cheap, like $40-$50 if you're patient and lucky. There are some small older Fender and Squier bass amps that you might find used for cheap also.

Check your local craigslist under musical instruments, and maybe visit a guitar shop (preferably with a friend who plays bass) and see what they have both new and used in your price range. If you don't have a friend, try to find a salesman you trust and have him play bass through the amps you're looking at. Turn up the amp while he plays and make sure it produces a loud and CLEAR sound. No distortion, no rattling - just deep, loud, clear (often called "clean") bass sound. You might find some distortion in any cheap small bass amp near max volume, but make sure you can turn it at least halfway up and still get a nice clean tone.

But whatever you get for an amp make sure it's a BASS amp, not a guitar amp, or he'll at least be unhappy with a farty-sounding speaker that's not designed for the deep frequencies a bass puts out, and at worst, he'll blow the speaker.

If this is for quiet practice at home, consider a headphone bass amp. These clip to your belt like a walkman or an ipod. You plug your bass into it and listen through headphones.

Finally, whatever you get him, he'll love it. Guys dig chicks who buy them music gear! Good luck.

The sourche for our(bassists) perfect tone! its a very personal thing!! So i think that, if u offer something related to music, it must be like a soveneir, our something to put on a shelve! so if it was me! i would love the gift, not to play live or reharsal, but like a special gift! ;)
