I am a female who is turning 40 next month  and I want to learn to play bass. I have played many other instruments but none with strings. I enjoy all music but would probably play top 40 and slap bass. What do I need to look for in my first purchase? Help me! Thank you!

For a first instrument, I would recommend a new or used Fender Jazz Bass made in Japan or Mexico.

You can get a variety of good finger style or slap sounds out a bass with 2 Jazz pickups, or a bass with 1 Precision and 1 Jazz pickup (sometimes called a P-J).

You can also get great sounds from a Precision bass (with only a Precision pickup), but having 2nd pickup in bridge position allows extra tone variety in my opinion. It all depends on what you like the sound of....

If you like the bass, you might later upgrade a couple components or later trade it in for a more expensive model.

Go to a music shop and play some basses to pick one that you like. Maybe take another bass player with you for advice.

If you have small hands and fingers, find a bass that has a short scale neck. 30" Neck, as opposed to a 34" neck. Fender, Gibson, and Epiphone have short scale basses. If you have to stretch too far, it makes it more work. In some cases, you really can't make the moves easy and quick enough on just normal riffs. Good luck.
