Should I get a vintage musicmaster? They are pretty cheap.

Pros and cons?

I guess I didn't think they were "cheap," the one feature that I thought was "cheap" was the origina strat pickup under the cover. Since I have replaced that my Musicmaster sounds much better.

Love the bass, and if all goes well I'll have a "Vista Tone" Squier version by the end of this week to go with my Fender MM. Than my SX short scale goes bye bye.

I wouldn't trade my MM for anything, not that I wouldn't love a Mustang too 8)

By cheap I meant the price. I've seen the vintage ones go $150-500 depending on condition

I've never seen a vintage Fender Musicmaster for less than $300, and I watch Evil-bay all time, just in case.

If you find one for $150, I'd snap it up. The Squier that I'm supposed to get tomorrow is $250, a nice Arctic White Vista Tone that will be a great partner for my Fender.

Even if the one you find for $150 needs some work, these things are so comfortable once you get them "tweaked" to your liking. Makes full scales seem like big heavy monsters by comparison.

Did you get your Vista?

I'm still looking for mine! Got outbid on several. My time will come...

WOO-HOO, yes I did, and thanx for asking. I found it on Craigslist, the guy was south of Milwaukee about 3 1/2 hours from me. I offered him the full asking price plus $50 if he would drive over 1/2 way and deliver. I paid $275 for it, it's really nice shape with only a couple dings, very low action, all original except for the volume/tone knobs.

I drove about one hour each way and picked it up last night. The only way I had to test it was my Tom Scholz Rockman headphone amp, worked well and no crackly pots, can't wait to plug it into my Line 6 Lowdown. Got a practice at church tonight so I can run it through some paces anyway.

See the photos below, I love this new one as much as my Fender MM, feels good to have two Musicmasters...... 8)

I have large hands but I purchased a Mustang bass, I love the short scale. I've been eyeing up the Rogue and Douglas hollow body Hofner knockoffs on ebay, because I can't afford a Gibson EB-2. Any thoughts on hollow or semi-hollow basses?

My experience with semi-hollow is limited. I started with an el Cheapo semi-hollow years ago. Tone was okay but give it any volume and all and it was prone to feedback. It worked for low volume jazz but not for rock.

Nowadays I have an Epi "Viola" bass and I love the thumpy/woody tone I get from it. Old Beatles aside, I find the woody tone works well with some vocal standards (such as Sinatra, etc.) where you might ordinarily use a double bass.

My only other experience is with a Breedlove electric/acoustic and that has a very bright boomy sound. That's set up with bright strings to stand up to unamped acoustics, so when I amp it at all, it's low volume. If I were using it primarily amplified, I'd replace the acoustic bass strings with something far more muted, such as stock nickel roundwound.

The one thing I can't tell you with either the Epi or the Breedlove is anything about feedback issues. In neither case have I played them loud enough for it to be an issue with any decent instrument.
