Today, I received a 1991 FENDER JP-90 that I bought online . Other than the pots needing cleaning, the bass appears to be in mint conditon...like almost new. But I have a question... Would/did Fender ever use a watermark or what looks to be like a decal on the headstock with the fender logo/serial #? .. My other fenders (a mustang and musicmaster) are not like this. The logo is usually under the finish and cant flake off. On this Bass, I literally can scrape off the Fender log (with the Made in USA and serial number) - its like a very clear fragile sticker that can easily flake off. Can this be? The headstock and neck are definitely the right configuration and style and look accurate (although they do look pretty new for a 20 yr old bass and whiter than usually golden maple) and the hardware is definitely the right ones (including shaller keys on the headstock). Any feedback would be great. The body looks brand new as if sitting in a closet for 20 years. And it arrived in a perfectly shaped case that is clearly 20 yrs old.

I have posted pics on a thread at (since I can't seem to upload here)

http://www.talkbass.com/forum/showthread.php?t=642447

It would seem odd to me that someone would go through the trouble of retrofiting a neck and headstock (fake) to a genuine body w proper hardware esp given these are not too expensive in the first place.

Appreciate the education.

Best regards

Thanks,

Joey

Wow a closet classic! That sure is almost new condition. Good score! It looks legit to me. I have a 1990 JP-90. Even though mine has been played quite a bit over the years, the decal is still very much intact and looks like there is some matte finish over it. Maybe the decal on yours just didn't get applied properly at the factory??? Maybe someone with guitar finish experience can reccomend a way to spray a clear coat over the decal to prevent it from further damage.

For comparison, here is the headstock of my JP-90. p.s. Look how much darker it's headstock is than yours. Who says polyurethane doesn't darken and relic over 20 years of use?

Anything is possible, but I agree that it doesn't make sense that someone would go to the trouble to fake a JP-90 bass.

Of course- that may be the reason why a JP-90 bass would be a perfect bass to fake. -Nobody is looking for fake JP-90s!

But i beleive that the decal probably didn't get over sprayed on your bass.

Weird stuff happens.

Thanks for the feedback. I will try to put a thin clear lacquer over the decal/headstock to keep it from falling apart. I think having the serial number is important if i ever want to sell it again. The headstock and body look like they've never been used. The neck has a bit of a curve and the pots need cleaning but looks like that's it.

Thanks again.
