I have a 1970 Competition Fender Mustang Bass in blue. It is in very good condition (not pristine) but all original. It still plays GREAT - I still play it! I was wondering what it is worth. I need to add it specifically to my home owner's policy if it worth more than the average piece of furniture. Can anyone give me a hint of its approximate value? Thanks - JasLady.

The following link suggests $1,300 for a standard Mustang bass of that era if mint, $1,100 if very good+ and $900 if very good.

http://www.may-studio-music-lessons.com ... -bass.html

The only pricing info I could find on a Competition model is from a guy in the UK who's been trying to sell his for a while. His is a 70 competition that I'd judge to be somewhere around very good, but it's missing the thumb rest.

He wants $1,899 (US) but he's getting no takers from the looks of it.

So for insurance purposes, about the best I could say with such limited info is that if yours is VG+ (which it sounds like), $1,500 would be reasonable and very conservative estimate.

I think that instrument is possibly worth more than the previously mentioned figures. I know of three for sale right now ranging from $1950 in good condition to $2495 in very good condition. If one is excellent it might push $3,000. The competition stripe adds quite a bit of value.

The only way to get a figure the insurance adjuster would respect is to get a written appraisal on your instrument from a recognized vintage instrument authority. The foremost nationally recognized appraisal authority is George Gruhn at Gruhn Guitars in Nashville. He will do a photo appraisal online. All respectable vintage instrument appraisal services will charge something for their time and trouble. They should give you a thorough signed appraisal on their service letterhead in writing. While it is more ideal to get the instrument appraised in person by an authority, an online appraisal is better than nothing.

A free appraisal here in this forum is worth exactly what you paid for it, which is nothing when it comes to dealing with insurance adjusters.
