Hello guys, I wonder if you can shoot an idea here. I´m being offered a 1977, Fender USA Music Master Bass, serial number S833891.

I was asked for US$500.00 here in my country. Is it a good price to pay? I haven't seen photos yet, and trying the bass myself will imply a little wait, `coz the owner lives in a different city, but I'd like to know if this price is ok, generally speaking. As soon as I get pics, I'll post them here.

I supppose that with the bass being 33 years old, condition is not going to be mint, but I expect it to look worn and aged (I believe it's going to be a plus). I just want to make sure the truss rod isn't bent badly of there´s any other defect of this sort. I'm e-mailing customer support about its specs and details.

I hope I can get some input on this so to make an informed purchase decision.

All the best,

Carlos

Alright. Here are the pics sent to me. I've resized them so they would not cramp up the display. They're current (the bass was photoed on yesterday's local paper).

Reported mods
Pups: DiMarzio Bass Model P DP 122 & DiMarzio Bass Ultra Jazz Bridge DP 148 The only original tuner is the one for the E string. The knobs are also unoriginal. The rest is reported to be unaltered.

I hope anyone can help me out here with a realistic price estimate. Thanks a lot.

I'd say $300- $500 is the average for one in good condition. Better condition and cases add more value on Evil-bay.

But what is on the neck on that one, burn marks? Mold? Leprosy? Kind of strange looking, I'd wonder if there is divots in the neck in those spots?

They're fun as hell to play though.

Thanks for your words. I'm still thinking if it´s a good buy @ $500. There aren't so many chances to get a real vintage instrument in my country, Peru. I'll try it by the end of the month.

The extra jazz style pickup and the split pickups are nice upgrades provided they are wired properly.

Hope it works for you if you like it. An interesting piece for sure.

The modifications may make it a better bass than the rather weak stock pickup.

Original Musicmaster basses had a Stratocaster pickup under a solid cover.

Since your bass already has the Precision and Jazz pickups you could go ahead and improve the bass by getting a new bridge with 4 saddles so tha you get better intonaton.

Or you could leave it alone and just play it.

Or you could restore the bass by filling the pickup routes with pieces of ash, get a new pickguard and install a strat pickup in the proper place with a solid cover. Finding a set of original tuners or three replacements may be hard to do, but they are out there.

You would probably need a new control plate and new pots for the simple volume tone setup. It could be done but you may not like the sound of the stack bass as much as what you have. Good luck with it!
