I just purchased a Squire Jazz SN E926114 that has a problem with the tone control. (As an explanation I repair stereo's both tube and transistor as a hobby.) Anyway there was a loose ground lead near the tone pot and a spot on the pot case where something had been soldered but was gone. The tone circuit would come and go sometimes bright and full (nice sound) and sometimes flat. I cleaned the pot with de-oxit and soldered the ground to the case and it is basically flat all the time now. The tone control knob does nothing but each pick-up volume works fine.

Now the questions can some one put a date on this by using the SN?

What would the next step be on fixing the tone circuit?

(I will be AFK till 3/8/10) Thanks, Bob

Fender has a handy serial number dater page here in this site. http://www.fender.com/support/usa_instruments.php
The "made in...." on your headstock is too small in the pic. Is it Japan? Then click on the link for Japan serial numbers.
Or you could take the neck off and check for a date at the heel of the neck to get a more accruate date.

Fender also has wiring diagrams. This one should be close. http://www.fender.com/support/diagrams/ ... 00BPg2.pdf How does it compare to yours?

Your bass is a eighty-nine(89) made in Korea jazz bass, sometimes you may see a VN/ prefix on this models serial number which would describe sort of a low grade vintage re-issue designed bass from korea .
the tone issue sounds like if it was not soldered when you bought it could be because it was purposfully disconnected because of a bad tone pot, which would make it not work at all now that you re-connected it.
I would break the bank and buy a new pot(5.00$)it cant hurt and it should fix it right up .!

I want to fix it correctly I just didn't know which way to go, I suspected a "dead spot" in the pot and after cleaning it just went open but I was unsure it that would have caused no output from bass or just no tone control. I have also been considering new pick-ups as long as it would make this bass better sounding. I play through either a Peavey (transistorized) 370 watt head & 2 x 15 cab & 2 x 10 cab or in more intimate (accompany a acoustic guitar player) a 15 watt x 1 x 10 combo I built with a Bell 2122 amp.

What about these at www.tubesandmore.com?

I also can't locate the proper tone pot on their list so any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Doc

The tone pot is a 250k pot just as both volume controls are.

It would probably help the bass to replace all of the pots, esp. if one has gone bad the others may soon follow.

There are many Jazz bass wiring diagrams available on the internet and if you buy new pickups, the manufacturer of the pickup should include a diagram to install them.

Try to get original carbon trace CTS pots made in the USA and get the set screw knobs to replace the knobs that came on your Squire bass.

YOu can also install a new capacitor on the tone pot for imporved tone performance.

Good luck with it.
