My first bass was a birthday present in 1964. It was a Burns "Sonic" very light, short scale with a single pickup that had adjustable pole pieces for each string. The machine heads would be more suited to a six-string guitar. It was notoriously difficult to keep in tune but had incredible sustain and attack. Recently I got it out of my loft and tried it through my HiWatt 100 amphead and speaker. It plays well just using feed-backwhile fingering the fretboard. I also have a Hofner "Verithin" which is rather basic. Both were resigned to the loft when 289847 arrived in 1970.

Here's a pic of my 1st bass that talked about earlier in the thread (well, not mine per se, but the same exact model, mine still had a pickguard)

Pretty, ain't it? Played nice, too.

There is terrible snobbery over various instruments, names, finishes etc.No matter how much it cost the sound is mainly down to your ability (reference Seasick steve). I was offered £900 for my 40 year old Precision today and accepted. If it were a pre-CBS bass I could understand but anyway I am now going to get a Squier Affinity P-Bass. I'll fit flats and set up the action to my liking and I bet no-one will hear the difference.

My first student bass was an old Aria copy of a Mosrite. It had a huge crack in the neck joint.

Next I got a new Fender JP90..a long scale bass. Very cool bass that was made in the U.S.A(really a Mexican/American hybrid according to the book entitled 'American Guitars an Illustrated History'). It actually had a small toggle switch to combine the P and J pickups. Pro bass for $460. in 1992. What a deal!!

My first one was a brand new blond Fender Telecaster Bass from Ralph's Radio Music, Demorest, Ga. I think it was about $230 including the hard case and tax and the case candy which included the stock dinky cable and the strap.

I,m getting on a bit now and still love playing bass guitar.
My 1st bass was a blonde Hofner President that after a year I p/exd for a Fender Precision ( I was the 18th guy to buy one in Scotland 1960)
I sold this 2 years later to pay for my wife n kid fare to Germany, used a Hofner P Bass copy and swapped this plus £20 for a Gibson EB 0.
After 2 years, I straight swapped the Gibson for a Fender 1964 Jazz Bass which I kept till I retired from music 1970 after 12 years in a pro band.
I wish I still had them as they are all worth lots of money now.
Funnyily enough, after 40 years I bought an Encore P-Bass that I altered in a bit of nostalgia, to look like my 1960 Fender precision and to see if I still had the feel, yes I do, and I play along to my CDs.

Go on Youtube and see my band John O, Hara / Playboys doing 3 songs of that era on German T.V 1965

My 1st was a Korean Hondo P bass copy played thru a Peavey Basic50. I was so embarrassed that I put a big Ibanez sticker on the headstock when I joined a band

Then I got my '87, and my guitar player - my best friend now, asked, "is that a Fender sticker on the headstock?" Good times :D

Guitar players always have something smart to say.

Good to see you back, it's been a while.
