It was a no-name semi-hollow Korean bass. The strings were a mile above the neck even after I had it adjusted and the neck itself couldn't be brought into perfect intonation. So you could only play up to about the 8th fret and the feedback at any volume much above 3 was uncontrollable.

My parents got it for me for Christmas for (from memory) $150 from a new mall music store. My mom was going to buy a used EBO from a co-worker for $250 (this was in 1967) but they couldn't see why anyone would pay $250 for a used guitar when they could get a brand new one for $100 less. So it sat hidden in a closet well past the return date and ... I was stuck with it.

I learned to adapt, playing it with an acoustic bass technique and I mic'ed the amp on a very low volume setting. I could never get very fast on it and rock was more or less out ... but I did have a unique sound around town. People playing jazz, blues or folk would call on me -- my adapted sound worked for those styles of music.

I sold that and the Ampeg Port-flex I was playing it through for $25 a year or so later. The bass ... no regrets, it was unplayable really; but the Porta-flex ... I saw a rusted one in "as is" condition at my local GC a couple of years ago with a $1,250 price tag. Ouch!

My first was a Peavy Fury II bought in 2001. After my girl at the time dumped me a week before christmas I took all her $@!& back and started to look for a bass. I fell in love with this green fender but saw the price tag at $1300, so I settled for the $300 peavy. I played around with it for a few years and the active electronics craped out on me. I bought the cheepest squire I could find 3 years ago and actualy learned how to play. I now have an 08 american standard, my pride and joy but the peavy, all stickered and scuffed is in it's case under the bed. Still pull it out from time to time.

A used CS 40th anniv. "P" bass with ebony board and I think a figured top, with birds eye maple neck. Should not have let it go...

My first bass was a Rogue, violin bass copy of a Hofner.I am left handed but set up the strings as a right handed bass.I had the nut changed out from a plastic to a hand carved bone nut and it was restrung with the E string on the bottm for me.Love it.
I actually just received yesterday, from Rondo Music,an SX vintage series, copy of a fender jazz bass.it is made of alder, has a maple neck and a maple fretboard, and it sounds awesome.Either clean or with a Behringer overdrive bass pedal,it sounds awesome!
Gonna take it to my local music store tomorrow and get the nut changed and restrung so I can jam on it!
I think,I am going to locate as many vintage basses(probably mostly copies),and purchase them over a period of time.I like the more obscure bass shapes, like 50's 60's stuff, not this ho hum, same ole mumbo jumbo shapes that it seems like all basses are shaped in these days. That is why I am looking for a left handed jaguar bass.I know there has got to be one out there somewhere. Also a mustang bass too.

I got my first bass in 1972, a friend of mine gave it to me so I could play bass while he played guitar. It was early 60's Fender Jazz bass. It was right handed and I flipped it over and played it upside down.

My first bass was a Charvette by Charvelle. I think thats how it went? It had p-style Jackson pickups and a thinner jazz type neck with a black pointy head stock. It was about $150.00 second hand. It was probobly early to mid 80s? ORANGE with rosewood neck. Pretty funky color but I could afford it. The guy in the store talked me out of a $99.00 very "cool" looking sunburst Cort bass with a thumb rest. He said the orange one was his old one and it was a much better bass than the "cool" looking one. He was right & it came with 5 free lessons.

It actually was a great bass! Never went out of tune, pups sounded good. I had it for 4 or 5 years and along the way I had ended up putting a white pick gaurd on it and found that the pupus were reversed from the Fenders so I had to cut it. Then came the pup cover, ashtray and thumb rest. Looked ok with the Orange. They gave me $50.00 for it on a new Fender Jazz. On the drive home I thought I should of kept it! For $50.00! What was I thinking! Wish I still had it. Any one know anything more about those basses???????????

My first bass was a 4 string Schecter Stiletto. I had it about two days and took it back to the store to trade in on a 5 string Stiletto. I bought it primarily for its looks but have been pleased with its sound and still have it.
