1974 Mustang Bass, my sister bought it for me I got a home made amp from a guy across the street for a few bucks.
I was living above the business my father owned, he did not like the noise, He really chewed on me. I traded it for a mandolin in 1976, turns out the mandolin is a 1907 Martin.

I really would like that bass back... I can dream can't I :)

I have a Fender Kingman Bass I bought yesterday, I also have a Martin 12 string, the mandolin, and an Epiphone Dot.

I'm going to have to find a white Mustang bass :)
Sam.

How do you like that KINGMAN? Is it working out well? Did you get a hardshell case for it and if so what case? Thanks!

My first bass was a borrowed Hagstrom solid body, not a Swede. This was back in 1969. My first owned bass was a Hofner single cutaway (les paul) model. The Hagstrom got me used to slimmer necks. Fenders have always been a little "big-boned" for me. Once played a Jazz that was amazing though.

the hofner club bass???

basically the same neck , hardware, and electronics as the violin, with a more normal shape.

Yes. A Hofner club bass. Wish I never traded it. My friend had it stolen and we saw it hanging up at a shop on 48th St NY. He brought me into the store to confirm that it was my bass. He couldn't do anything, he just wanted to know.

I must say, the rapid decay of notes has its' uses but it can be a liability too. I may get one of the newer one one day. Never liked the Beatle bass to play, not a good lap guitar.

Thanks for the pic. Mine was like the top one without the snazzy trim.

My next bass was a Hagstrom Swede. Get neck, nice to play. Kinda lame sound though. Pick-up were not responsive to what the hands did, IMO. Hofner was cool, if you really plucked the string it would over drive, like a fuzz. If you played nice, just wide open tone.

My forst bass was brought overseas, brand new, took several paychks but I was proud to have my tabacco burst 75 precission, although I really wanted a Jazz with the maple neck and black blocks, later I turned more into fretless, having feel in love with the fat and often harmonic Jaco sound. I have owned several basses since, several japan made, one squire, but have always wanted a custom lefty fretless, and a five string fender jazz.

I played Tea Chest Bass in a Skiffle band when I was 14 years old. We played on street corners and in West London Pubs from 1958/9. I also de strung an old Mandolin and made it a kinda short scale bass. We had no money! When I could, I got a Hohner?, then a Fender MIM second hand. Now I'm almost 68. I have a Fender Marcus Miller, a Yam, BB714BS and a Yam, 374 bass. I played a lot around Europe. Sometimes I was real hungry, but we were young and didn't care! I never played a P Bass. So I wanna do that before I die.
Living in Spain all these years I have developed a taste for Latin, Jazz rock fusion.
I never settled on one make of strings though I would like to. Living on state pension blocks me from that exposure sadly. Something else for my wish list!
I have a hundred bass playing roll models that inspired me. Most of them session men/women!
I learnt to play by ear so right now I'm trying to learn to read music. I have a lot a Chicago, Blood sweat and Tears Sheet music books so I'm never going to get bored am I?
If you have any recordings of your bass on mp3 or wav i would love to hear them.

My first bass was a Kingston short scale that my dad bought me when I was 14 or 15. My first "real" bass was an Eko violin body, a junkie stole that and I replaced that with my first and only Fender, a 1968 Telecaster Bass that I picked up brand new in 1968 for $200 w/ case. I still have it.

Wow, great topic, took me right back to some very good times. My first bass was a 1962 Fender Jazz, purchased used in 1965 for $125 and, no, I don't have it anymore....darn it. I bought it from a Milwaukee garage band called Fluid. In 1968 it played on the main stage at SummerFest with our band, The NiteWalkers - its only claim to fame during my ownership, and it didn't even get paid for that! I sold it in 73 to pay the electric bill. No idea how much I sold it for. Talk about memories. But that bass is what started me collecting Fender basses when I picked it up again and, yes, there is an American Jazz in that collection, a younger brother.

Fluid is a great name for a garage band. Excellent.

My first bass came out of the Montgomery Ward catalog, SG-EB copy. Traded that for an Ampeg bass. Yes they made a few in the 70's. That got traded for my first Precision, probabaly a 75 model in what I assume was Rootbeer, it was brown anyway. Still wish I had that one. Now I own a MIM Jazz in L.P.Blue and a 2004 American Standard P in sunburst w/maple neck.

What year about, did you get your EKO violin? I had one back in 1969.
