I played bass before I played guitar.
I started out on a crappy old black Synsonics. I traded a stereo amplifier for it. I had no money at the time and a friend of mine had just recieved a new Carvin. (Thanks Brian!)
It eventually fell apart because I played it so much.
All the while asking my folks for a decent bass. 4 years of asking, it was all I asked for. And then for Christmas It was hidden behind the tree, wrapped in a garbage bag. I remember opening it and seeing the Fender logo. I was in love. It was like the movie "A Christmas Story", only noone shot their eye out, maybe lost some hearing....
A candy red Fender Prodigy. I still have it. It was my first "Real" bass.

So What Was Your First Bass?
Got A Good Story Behind It?

Nice that you didn't shoot your eye out with your first bass,

My first bass was an Ibanez copy of a Rickenbacher 4001, in red. It was a very smooth playing bass and I got it for only $200 from a friend that needed some cash. I played it for a couple years and really learned all the basics on it. But it was so HUGE, long neck, that big horn. I'm only 5'6" so it was just ridiculously big on me.

I than had another more human sized Ibanez until I got my Musicmaster which I've had for 13+ years now.

Not as good a story as yours.

Mine was a Maestro that turned out to be a Univox (factory second I think) I had removed the plastic "Maestro" nameplate that had been nailed on the headstock out of curiosity. It had "Univox"inlaid in pearl (faux? I don't know) underneath.
I think it was a factory second becuase there were a couple of spots where the finish had splashed over on to the binding. And the fact it was only fiddy bucks new.
It was a semi acoustic, looking like a Gibson ES 335 type body shape, short scale, bound body and neck. What looked to be humbucking pups, standard V/T V/T, 3 position pup switch arrangement, It had a really nice red burst over a bookmatched foto-flame finish. It had an adjustable bridge with a flip-up mute on a rosewood stand, loose like on an archtop jazz guitar.(not mounted to the body.)
Not the greatest bass in the world but it was nice, really pretty, and easy to play, I credit that bass with inspiring me to keep at bass, unlike the crappy Domino guitar I had earlier which frustrated me and deterred me from playing guitar.

My first bass was a used Hondo Jazz Bass copy with chunky chrome pickups. The truss rod was pretty stripped and the body was heavy. It had a 2 piece bridge and a vintage style chrome cover/mute.

It looked pretty close to this:

I later bought a 1985 Fender Jazz Bass Special and never looked back.

It was a brand "Castella" and it was FENDER P BASS copy. From there I moved up to a Blonde "Vantage" Bass with Blonde Dizmarzio pickups.

Mine was a Coral, which was a Danelectro. It was made to resemble a Jazz bass, two pups, sunburst finish and guitar size tuners. That was weird, the gears were the right size but the tuners were a bear to turn especially when changing the strings.

I bought it new in 1967, along with a Randal (Just a name on a glued on plate) amp. It was a combo with 2 15's, no power and sounded like mud. Back then it didn't really matter, we all sucked, but damn we worked hard.

That bass lasted through my "Beach" music phase, my "Polka" stage and early Beatles stage. My next bass was a "67 Jazz which I bought new in early 1969.

I could go on and on with equipment buyig but all you asked for was the first.

This is my first (and only) bass--a MIJ EB-3 copy.
I love it--light, easy to play--sounds cool with both pickups (the neck pickup is a bit weak on its own though.)
I've considered buying a long scale bass several times over the years-but I just don't play bass enough for that--and I love playing this one.

If I'd played bass in a band I probably would have a few basses-

Yeah I do, when I bought mine the 2 15's were much more impressive to a dumb kid who didn't know anything.

My first bass was a second hand Korean Hondo P copy from the mid 80s. It looked pretty much like this one (the bridge is identical but the knobs on mine were P like). Image
It was a nice piece of bass, 3-ply pickguard, body-through strings, and a nice tone for sure. I sold it because the truss rod needed repair and I didn't have the money (In hindsight, I wish I handn't sold it). Then I bought and sold a Samick J clone, a 5 string Memphis Ibanez like (Chinese crap -naive me), until I landed a Yamaha RBX375 (two powerful humbucker pups). I still have it. After it, my Sting P came along. Since then I've become addicted to Fender. I'm looking for a MIA to buy.

The first bass I played was a borrowed '76 Fender Jazz plugged into a half stack Fender amp. Oh man, sweet rig, but if you were holding the bass (touching the strings) and at the same time touched a microphone, it would shock the beejeebees out of you!!!
My first purchase was a '94 MIM P bass - black w/ tortoise pickgard. Very nice sound, but I soon found out that my short arms and small hands were never going to be proficient on a 34" scale neck.

Now, I'm playing a '78 Mustang - sunburst finish, a little dinged up but sounds great and the short scale is much easier to "reach" for me.

Rogue, the cheapest one.

I got it for almost nothing, which is why I picked it up, and didn’t even know at the time I’d be on bass, but the guitar players I was hooking up with were better than I, and I didn’t mind going to bass.

I’ve since gotten a few Fenders now and a Squier, and a killer rig including two Fender Pro 410s.

I’m quite happy how it turned out. :)

My teenage band went from a 4 piece group down to 3, I had a 1974 Ibanez Les Paul copy for rhythm that I sold to buy an Ibanez 4001 Rick copy. I thought the neck had too much lamination and it had some fret buzz, I eventually sold that one also. I currently have a 2005 Mustang, love the short scale and low end boom. I'm thinking of picking up a used semi-hollow body if I can find a decent one at a good price.
