My husband inherited this from his grandfather. We're trying to figure out how much it is worth. Any ideas? We think it is 1966 but the neck says 1963.

You should ck around on ebay see how much a guitar like yours would fetch. Also, you can ck the serial # and product date it here on resourse or support. Search it, it's there. Good luck.

The last two vintage 60s ones seen at metro Chicago guitar shows were like 4+ and 6+ thou US$ each and both were sunburst, not custom colour.

George Gruhn of Gruhn Guitars will give you a straight appraisal.

I found my used ('95/'96 production) MIJ Fender VI at Sam Ash in Indianapolis, in May of '07, for $750.00.

At the time, I was looking to buy a rockabilly box, or my first all-tube combo amp, and had tried a Gretsch Electromatic 5125 (DeArmond 2000s) through a Fender Hot Rod DeVille 410 before trying the Fender VI. Considering the price of a new Custom Shop N.O.S. Fender VI versus the used one, I decided I'd regret it if I passed on the Fender VI.

Lovely MIJ VI. Good on you, Surfabilly.

How does it sound on surf, anyway? What songs have you played through it?

For some (not yet recorded) original instrumentals that I've been "cooking," it's perfect, and the secondary reason I bought it, over the Hot Rod DeVille or Electromatic 5125. While I was trying out the VI in the store, I created parts for two songs I've been piecing together for the past 17 years. Once that happened, I stopped trying it, unplugged and took it to the counter.

Other than noodling about with it, and tweaking the parts I'd mentioned above, I haven't played many existing songs. Of course I wasn't going to resist picking out "Rawhide," "Bonanza," "Happy Trails" and definitely "Mission, Impossible." So, aside from working on surf instrumentals, I'll also be looking to do some spaghetti western/spy/sci-fi instrumentals, as well. :)

Surfabilly, give The Magnificent Seven and Harlem Nocturne and Desifinado a go.

The VI strikes this picker as a tenor sax with strings. Way under-rated.

Inasmuch as Fender re-issued the 70's Telecaster Bass in their Squier line, why couldn't they do the same with the Fender VI ?

The Bass VI is available from the Custom Shop. If memory serves, retail is $3789.00, street cash price in the mid $2 Ks.

And it is freaking beautiful and toneful and instantly playable and 'has presence'.

Terrific, but my point is what about those poor folks who don't have 3800 bucks to spend on a bass guitar? In short, most of us...
Oh, by the way, it is actually called the "Fender VI"...The only one that actually reads like that on the neck is the Bass V (mid 60's 5 string bass)

Acknowledged and points given on both, docfowler.

'Believe Fender refers to it as the Bass VI in some literature, not simply the VI as on the headstock.

A '63 Bass Vi in custom Olympic White color is worth a lot of bucks if all original and in such a nice condition.
Keep time to have a serious appraisal.
