It proved that Leo Fender definitely had created something very cool and very special. No other instrument had that exact bass tone but the single coil P-Bass. Once they started tinkering with the Telecaster Bass....they messed up a really good instrument in my opinion.

Agreed! While I think there are things I could do with the Seth Lover version. The Modern Player TB get's close. Really only needs independent tone and volume controls and a 3 stage selector switch and a vintage spec neck and I'd want one. There really isn't anything quite as cool as a single coil P bass. The way it sits in a mix is unreal. In my band we've just added a second guitarist. We've got a Telecaster on lead, a Strat on rhythm and my 51RI P on bass. I've got to tell you, there are moments where everyone in the room just stands back after finishing a song and just listens to them ring together. It's a breathtaking sound. I love my split coil 62RI P, but it really doesn't sing like the single coil 51RI. It's a sound neither a J or split coil P can touch.

Our bass player back in the day owned a paisley-finished Tele bass......

It took about eight months for Fender to process the custom order and ship the instrument out. It was worth the wait though -- it had a unique sound that I've never heard from any Fender bass before or since.

Thanks. I thought it mildly appropriate since somebody mentioned "The Ginger Stepchild". Tim Minchin is that rare musical comedian who is a brilliant comedian and a brilliant musician.
