Hi -

Just got this Fender P/J made in Korea via a trade - anyway I'd like to put a manufacture date with the bass as well as the current value.

Serial number is: 04118666, located on the back of the headstock. Below the serial number it reads "Made In Korea".

There are hipshot tuners on the bass, there is a small square CE block on the back of the headstock.

Can anyone give me some info on this bass? Pretty cool IMO, and came with the bud light strap as well :)

Here's a pic:

Hi PROGRMR, Welcome to the forum.

Is this a SQUIER? I think it is a Squier Precision Bass Special.

If it says SQUIER on the headstock (or "SQUIER by Fender") then I suggest that you should repeat your post to the Squier forum as there are more Squier fanatics there.

The 04 in the serial leads me to think it is likely to be a 2004, but with Squier Korean serials there is no sure method. Fender never made any pure Fender branded instruments in Korea that I know about, just SQUIERS.

Also it would be helpful to post closeup photos of the headstock and the serial number. Any bass has some value. This one by the addition of the advertising decal/graphics is a bit unique. I'd pay 5 to 10 dollars more for it than a regular used Squier Precision Bass Special. Someone else might add $25 or some beer nut might add $50. I know advertising promo basses are rarer, but to me they are not especially desirable since I wouldn't play it in public because I don't want to give free advertising or seem to endorse a product, especially that one since I'm a Pabst Blue Ribbon fan. Where I am I would think it would be worth about $150 to $180 used.

I don't think it's a squire...and it better not turn out to be one lol! Traded a brice 6-string with $400 EMG preamp and 40/45 soapbars for it!

Here's some pics of the head stock:

Does this bass use a battery?

That is a unique bass. The headstock decal is one usually affixed to active MIM P-Bass Specials right down to the "DELUXE SERIES" lettering near the peghead tip.

Further, the serial does not conform to modern Fender standards because there is no alpha characters at all. It also does not conform to known Squier MIK standards either because it has one digit too many, which might indicate the special run. Usually Korean basses with no alpha prefix would have 6 or 7 digits with the first digit being the year. If that holds true, it is a 2000 model. The other option is that 04 means 2004. Can't say for sure because the serial is non-conforming. Could be one of those oddball special run things. There won't be many around that is for sure.

I've only seen a couple of MIK Fender model basses before. The "Jazz Bass 24" (with 24 frets) and the P-Bass Lyte. There may have been others of course but I don't remember seeing them.

You may have to contact Fender consumer relations to find out the date of manufacture based on the serial. Telephone: (480) 596-7195
Fax: (480) 367-5262
E-mail: consumerrelations@fender.com

As for what it is worth, you'll need to get it appraised. I'd suggest George Gruhn of Gruhn Guitars in Nashville.

Pickups are passive so no battery. My understanding is that bud light had some of these made for bass players sponsored by bud light. I saw one on my local CL going for $550 a few months ago. I'm not really interested in selling, although I do have GAS for a jazz :)
