That's the original Fender Bass V. They came out in the mid to late 60's and were strung with a high C string instead of a low B.

If you check the neck you will see that it only has 15 frets!

The normal high range of a 4 string was accomplished by the high C string.
You have to remember that bass amps in the sixties and seventies had a hard time reproducing the low notes on a 4 string bass.
A Low B on a Five string would stress and blow up most bass speakers at the time.
Plus, bass strings were very inconsistent back then.

John Paul Jones used one of these basses in Led Zepplin.

This was the first five string bass designed by Leo Fender.

The bodies on these things are huge!

The next iteration of a Leo designed five string bass was the G&L L-5000.

Thats a pretty cool bass but really not that practical.

the original fender bass v is amazing. i love it, and i wish they would reissue it. most people claim the high c string is pointless, it is not. it allows the bassist to go to higher notes and back without moving up and down the neck. the highest note is still Eb, just like on a 20fret precision/jazz/jaguar bass. for those slap bassists you can get the highs without having to move down the neck, and you can incorperate more lows, sense youre more towards the top of the neck. it looks very cool, like the mustang bass, except it has a long body. to some it is pointless, ugly,a disgrace, and an example of cbs's rule of fender....to me,its a kickass vintage bass, that i would love to own, and for the world to meet again, and bassists to try out, and love, and play newly, and play more deversed with the notes, not all lows, and not all highs.....a medium.
