I have a really old bass with the original hard shell case, I was trying to find it online to figure out how much it's worth and mostly trying to find out what year it was made.

It has less frets then the average bass and has a pale yellow paint job. The neck-plate on the back is square with the Fender F on it and the number above is 588606. Is that number the serial number?

The person that sold me this bass told me it was from the 60's, but then I read on the internet that Fender musicmaster basses weren't even manufactured untill 1970. Is that true?

If you could please help me that would be wonderful.

You bass was made between 1974 and 1975, and yes that number is the serial number of your bass.
The color was probably originally white and the aging of its clear coat has made it appear light yellow. This is very common with this color and quite desirable, so don't refinish it.

It sounds like a nice bass.

Please post a picture of it if you can.

Alright, thank you. This definitely helps. Any ideas on what it would be worth? It's still in pretty good condition and it sounds great. It still has the original case too.

Value on Musicmaster basses varies based on condition and originality of all of the finish and parts on the bass.

Without a picture, I would say a Musicmaster bass in very good condition from the mid-70s with a hard case would be worth between $400 and $650 dollars.
If the finish is in bad shape with lots of scratches , missing paint in places and non-original parts, it would be worth less.

If it is in pristine shape, then good for you.

If you bought it for less than $350, you can be assured that you have gotten a good deal no matter what the condition (within reason).

If you paid more and you love the bass, well then, you be the judge as to what it is worth to you.

Ebay completed auctions for Musicmaster basses will give you an idea of the national value, but recent prices have tended to be lower due to the economy, so you can get burned by a high auction price from ,say, 2 years ago.
Good luck with your bass.

Musicmaster basses have very nice necks for short scale basses.
It is nice to play them even when they are made fretless. This is not a mod that I recommend for a MM bass, but if you have one that is already converted, then you know what I mean.

Be real careful with the pickguard around the jack. One good hit on a cord can crack that pickguard.
