Well, which one do you have currently? $500-$600 puts you smack dab in the Standard P or J Bass range.

Standard Jazz is about $500-$600, so are the P basses...before hagling ;) Or the Squier route for the CV or VM will net you less too.

Good luck.

Oh yes! I am a big proponent of the Squier CV series. I've played the 60's P-Bass and it is VERY nice. Try them out. They may serve as an excellent low-cost backup for your RH.

for a back up....i bought a squier black p-bass 20th anniversary i bought it with a nice gotoh bridge in it and a red perloid pickguard i just added and emg pickups with the emg preamp i really like it a lot i think i got a good one!
now i can rest my 85 sienna sunburst p-bass from having to take it to drag it to rehearsals.

oh btw ive been looking at the white cv precision squier and i like those a lot i tried it out at guitar center and it felt sweet!

I agree, the Squier CV basses are decent for a reasonable price, or you may want to look at used gear, such as the Jaguar or Mustang.

Hey Rich, I am Richard A and I too bought a 3tone sunburst Jag, The only parts I am going to replace eventually would be the bridge to a BadAssII chrome and if need be replace the white neck nut to a brass nut. I am waiting for mine to come in to my dealership. Should be either today or Friday, so that means by this Saturday I should be playing happily on my Jaguar.

Since you have a Jazz already, I'd look for something with a P/J pickup arrangement for a different voicing option but with a Jazz neck for familiarity such as the current P-Bass Special.

I had a couple of Fender P/J basses and they were both great. First a new passive JP90 and I liked everything about it except the wacky pickguard shape. Then I got a MIM Precision Bass Special "Cowpoke" that was active. The neck on the Cowpoke was a Jazz neck and it had stacked pots.

The Jaguar though is certainly a good suggestion considering the blowout pricing on them right now at a few of the online dealers. Always liked the RED one myself and the sunburst looks really good too. You can use the online dealer pricing as leverage to buy locally at a reduced price.
