Dammit hellkat!

All you and WI KISSfan talking about these short scales and your Bucky made me go buy my own Bucky this afternoon! :D

She's a sweetie! Black. I got her a nice little hard case as well. I've been playing around a bit this evening. Fun!

Now - what do I need to do to get her up to speed pickup wise? What else do you suggest? She has a nice fit and feel to her, I can't fault the quality of her finish at all.

You know, the Vista MM's are weird - I haven't seen any in a long time, then in the last three weeks on eBay there have been 3 of them...

I'll get some pic's up soon. Now I need a red Mustang Bass to match my Mustang 6 string...

Congrats RickyD!

They are so fun to play.

Here's what i slapped in Bucky.
http://cgi.ebay.com/Fender-Strat-Stratocaster-Single-Coil-Humbucker-Pickups_W0QQitemZ220485407207QQcmdZViewItemQQptZGuitar_Accessories?hash=item3355f451e7

This guy did his homework on these pups.
i suggest using a multi meter to find the hot leads.
Hook them bad boys together and you will be rockin.
They're wired for guitar and can be coil tapped
no need for that in a bass.
It has a volume knob...LOL

i really like that pickup and his rating of 13.7 is correct.
Great for the bucks...a Duncan like that could run you about
80 to 90 bucks.
The white with chrome rails are saweet looking too.
Not much filing needed on the pickguard for those either.
Nice fit...The screws they ship with the pup are cheesy.
May want to have a replacement screws handy. lucky for me i had some.
Screws are really cheap alloys...i didn't trust them.
That pup has to be low too.
Very Strong pickup...

Yeah , the Blue Vista this week looked awesome.
i loved on mine MM today.
It's hard to put it down.
They sound really great on the classic stuff...
Which is all i play basically.

Welcome to the club!
i enjoy the bass shop talk here!

Buck On & On!

A red mustang bass, I'd love one of those two. As Hellkat says, "when I have the cabbage."

Congrats on your purchase. Hearing about Hellkat's squier mods makes me think I should have gone that route rather than the SX...which I don't play as much as my MM.

Here's what I put in my MM, it really put some fat bottom and nice tone in my short scale. I'm not advocating Ebay or anything either, it was just a good photo of the pup. I've been very happy with it.

Look forward to your photos.

The SX is a good bass.
Never played that type tho.

i went with a Bronco/Musicmaster set up for mostly scale length.
The maple board may feel way different for you after
switching from your Musicmaster. The SX may
have a closer feel to your MM, i don't know

When i switch i appreciate the scale and fret placement.
i don't like looking at my axes when i jam.
Gene taught me that one...
So i like the notes to be where i feel them.
BUT the Bronco neck is a lil meatier than the Musicmaster.
i know, go figure...But it is.

That Duncan has a reasonable price.
Prolly in a brick and mortar store
they'd prolly run about 65.00 to 75.00.
Looks like my Vista Tone too.
What's the resistance on that pup?
Did you have to shield the cavities?

RickyD...you gettin this? LOL

i always do this on all my basses.
Pull the bridge, take aluminum vent tape
stick one to the body then lay the ground wire on it then
on top that put another piece of aluminum tape on top of wire.
Agathis or Basswood is softer than Alder so you may need
slightly larger screws to sink the bridge tight.
Make a world of difference.

The reason for that is, the paint where the ground is
will sink into the body over time.
When it does you will lose your grounding.
Defintely don't won't that happening if you sing back up.
OUCH! Lights Out! Man did yall see that?
Shock Me ...make me feel better...
Aint that right Ace? LOL
Les Pauls are famous for bad bridge grounds.

Red Bronco Gtrs are awesome!
Have to see that some time.

i do enjoy the shop boys!

Bass On!

Hey Hellkat, that SD pickup is rated at 11.81k. No further shielding was done but I didn't put it in either. There is an awesome luthier in our town who does fantastic work at a great price. I think he charged me like $20 to install that thing. I'm handy up to a point and he's about the only person I'd trust one of my babies with.

The SX def has a cool feel, it's the first maple neck axe I've ever had, bass or guitar. I wanted it to be short scale but have a little different tone than the MM. I would say the jazz body has a very nice feel, seems contoured very well and not quite as neck heavy as the MM. The neck itself may be just a bit narrower up near the nut. It's got a cool feel to it for sure. It had Marvin written all over it, hence the sticker.

HK, check out my MM horror story thread, almost lost my MM on Thur night, that would have been crushing.

My eyes got a little wider when I saw that picture.

Nice bass! Is that in surf green??

Why isn't Fender putting out stuff like this nowadays? At least that bass has a little flare to it.

According to musicians friend the Blue Vista Musicmaster
bass was called Sonic Blue.

Quote:
The new Squier Musicmaster Bass uses a single-coil "Vista Tone" pickup in its simple, straight forward design. The solid alder body with a string-through-the body design provides maximum tone and sustain. There are four fully adjustable saddles to help with height adjustments and intonation of each string. The scale is 30 inches. The Musicmaster Bass is available in: Black, Arctic White, Shell Pink and Sonic Blue. The retail price is $400 including gig bag.

For more information you can contact Fender Musical Instruments at 7975 N. Hayden Road, Suite C-100, Scottsdale, AZ 85258. Phone them at: 602-596-9690. Web to: www.fender.com

i have no idea why they don't.
Hell Fender doesn't even make a Musicmaster as far as i know.

The Cool Vibe Squiers didn't release a MM either.

The 97 MM Vista must have cost too much to build.
See the retail price musicians friend said they were?
Maybe a Squier Pro Tone was the closest to price
compared to the Vista series.
400.00 is high dollar considering it was 12 yrs ago
and it being a Squier bass.
With current market woes...i think it makes
the Vistas even more collectible in my opine.
They're more rare than most Fender basses are.

WOW! That's way hotter than the Vista Tone stock pup!
Bet that thing does sound awesome!
He gave you a good deal on the installation.

Hey there HK, this whole dialogue we've had here is the first time on here I've actually felt connected to the community on here. So I'm still a newbie to in that respect.

I'm a self taught hack with no idea how to read music or apply theory to anything so mostly I just read and absorb from here. At least here I had something to contribute.

Yeah, the luthier here is just awesome. The guy is mid-50's or so, all the patience in the world. Whenever I get a guitar or have an issue I go straight to him and he can just eyeball a problem and he knows what he's gonna do.

Besides the work on my MM, he did a bunch of work on my Montara for me. The original pup system in that A/E was pretty weak and the battery access was through the soundhole, really clumsy design, but the neck and the body were just so comfortable to play. So when the preamp finally died altogether I got a new one. Now I tried to get something from Fender but was disappointed when I was told they had no specs on that model and didn't know what would fit well. I found a Dean A/E haning at a local music store and measured it, found out it was perfect size. One call to them and I had a new preamp on the way for $70. Clay/luthier installed it with only some small cutting to do, replaced the nut and the saddle with bone ones and put it all together for me for $30. Unbelievable price for all that work, and what a difference it all made.

Rock on my brotha!

That seems kinda odd. Maybe it was beginners luck for me.
This thread is on fire. i'm diggin it as well.
i see the connection as well here now.

i don't get the stigma against short scale Fender basses.
Maybe bassist think they're like undesirable chics...
They're fun as hell to ride one, until a friend sees you on it.

Yes you do have much to contribute.
i'm a bass hack too. my education of music came from
school bands.i played trumpet, baritone and tuba before playing the bass.
Some of that ed applies some but more in theory than actual musical notes.Bass clef to treble clef can be confusing.
1812 Overture was a $@!&* on Tuba in bass clef.
i had been use to reading treble clef on all other tunes.

The band i'm in now...we all practice at home.
i play by ear to cds on my PC.
When i run into a wtf is that note
i start searching the net for the tabs.
i still get retarded and can learn a tune but can still miss
that one note that doesn't fit the typical progression.
Those are usually really cool tunes too.
The guys laff at me when i say, sorry dudes,
i got retarded on that one...LOL

Quote:

That's nutz...Wonder why would they do that?
Maybe if they cared more about customer service
they'd get more converts to their products.

Ampeg is the same way.
i had a V2 and asked did they have the schematics to make a re-issue of that head. They said no and asked would i send one if i had one.
i did send a copy, but no respect was paid back for it.
And they never did re-release the V2 afterwards either.

Keep Clay close!
He sounds like a gem of a guy.
And he's more than reasonable on his labor.

You remind me of a friend from Kenosha(?spelling) Ryan.
He didn't play bass but came over to hang out
after work one day and i palyed Them Bones
by AIC and he freaked and went and bought a bass & amp
even tho he never played.
That blew me away...that i influenced him that way.
He's a great guy too!

You rock on too my WI brother!
Thanks much for the bass geek talk!
My girl thanks you as well.
She gets that glazed over look when i start bass geekin...LOL
She's pleased i have an outlet for my bass madness.

Hey hellkat, WI KISSfan,

I had the Bronco bass out tonight - had a lot of fun. She is smoother for me to play than my P-Bass, but since I'm pretty much still a noob w/ the bass, I can't really say one is better than the other for me. What I do know is that I'm diggin' the Bronco!

hellkat - thanks for the pup info. I'll get one ordered for her. Let ya know how it goes.

Now you've got me thinking whether I want to find a Musicmaster Bass from the '70's, a Mustang Bass, or even spice things up w/ a Jaguar Bass. I went to Guitar Center Friday and toyed around w/ the Mustang and the Jag - both seemed like a lot of fun.

All three (MM, Mustang, Jag) would be in a similar price range. Ideas?

It's all personal choice at that point, seems you've made the decision to go with a short scale which is cool, always good to have another person in our ranks 8)

I've never played a Jag, I stumbled across my MM and fell head over heels for it so never looked back. If I had the cabbage I'd have a Mustang too but that's not in the works right now.

All I can say about Broncos, and I think HK has said it already, play before you buy since their are some gems and "not so gems" out there with those.

Whatever you pick, you'll eventually pick one up and say "this is it" and it's all fun and games from there.

Yeah, I was very disappointed in the response I got. I called back on 2 seperate occasions just to be sure I didn't just get someone the first time who didn't care. I kept asking, you have no info on this guitar you made? It was a big letdown on cust service for me. The Dean people were great, I gave them a model number and told them why I was ordering a brand new model preamp without a guitar, they were helpful and I had it in like 3 days.

We learn all our tunes by ear, on our own, than come together and play them. When we find one of those WTF notes we just play what we each might think is right and stick with the one that sounds best  We are very stripped down with just guitar/bass/drums so it's pretty easy to adjust as well.

I never took a lesson on anything, so all of my bad habits and wrong notes are thrown in free of charge

Gem is an understatement, he lives very close to me too so convenient as hell. When I call him he says just bring it on over and tell me about it, LOL. THe cool part is he wants to know the history on all my guitars, where'd I get it from, how I chose it, etc. He treats each one like it's his own baby. Just too cool. I've tried to pay him more than he asks just because I know he works cheap, like a tip, but he won't take it. He says he just enjoys seeing someone into their music and toys.

My wife gets pretty glazed over too when I talk guitars. She knew she married an "offbeat" kind of guy when she saw my KISS collection so the guitars is just another facet. She's happy that I have such a great interest but she doesn't much share in the details.

Can you believe she thinks that one guitar is no different from another? Gotta love her anyway!

Kool deal! Ur Welcome!

My choice would be the Musicmaster or Mustang.
i lean a lil more to the Mustang because of the string thru design.
Not a fan of jazz type pups.
Jags sound doinking and noisy to me.
Heard the Jags neck dive as well.
