That's awesome that you're so happy with the Squier, I certainly know the feeling. I have never heard anyone with such a ringing endorsement for the Squier bass line, but it's very cool. My first electric a couple years ago was a Squier Strat in Cherry Sunburst, and that was a reliable guitar that served me well. I only got rid of it when I wanted to raise some $ for the Tie Dye Strat I have now.

As for not taking those before pictures of my MM, to this day that haunts me since I'm usually the detail type guy that would do that. It was a dumb oversight on my part. If I had them it would be very hard to imagine that the rusty and peeling monstrosity that was recovered would turn into the bass I have now. You asked about the neck on it, the strings were very loose, one was even off the tuning machine so maybe that helped spare the neck. I took it to a luthier for two things, tweaking the neck and resetting the bridge, cost me around $50 and both were good. Another amazing part of it all that the neck came through it all so well. I had moved set screws and things around on the bridge so that I could clean out corrosion, kept it original. Tried to do that with the tuning machines but two of them were just too far gone. And you asked about the body, 6 pc laminate is how mine is.

About the only famous bassist that I know of that played a short scale, if I'm correct, is Jack Bruce from Cream. He played an Epipone that I believe was a EB0 or something like that. Like I said, I could be wrong but I believe that was a short scale SG lookalike and he was pretty damn good, played bass like a guitarist.

The lead player in our band has played my MM many times and every time he comments on how he'd snag it in a heartbeat if I decide to part with it. 8) He has one of the new chambered Epi Lp's and loves that thing, one of his main toys. Thought I'd mention it since you mentioned them.

What kind of amp are you playing through? I just got a Line 6 lowdown 300 that I'm pretty happy with. Since we went down to bass/guitar/drums/singer I like have the little extra depth that the effects provide just to fill up our sound somewhat.

Have a great day.

i am truly impressed by the Squier Vista Musicmaster.
So were the people watching us @ rehearsal last night.
i had one of the best comments i've ever had.
This cat named Troy, that i've never met before had to tell me what a
good bassist i was...then told the band...hey yall have a real bass
player now. i was humbled thanked him and then said...
"i'm hanging around until they find a real bass player." LOL
Cain (gtr) replied no Bro, we've found you, you're staying.
i contribute most all of that to the shortscale.
People don't know what to expect when they see a small
bass and then ya crank it up and they're like WTF...
and without looking intimidating or nerdy at the same time.
Can't play a Tree anyway...

The sustain is incredible.Full warm bottom end
w/tone cranked wide open without any clicking or fret dings.
Highs sang thru without being too treblely .

Okay then yours has the same type 6 lam alder pieces.
Some mustangs are too.

Your Musicmaster's story is so incredible.
It's amazing how it made it through and is still kickin it!
i bet he would....LOL
How strange...but i thought the Gibson was the chambered.
It's what they had listed in the newest musicians friend.
He must have a different year.
Maybe the new 2009 Gibson silverburst les pauls are the ones that are chambered bodys.
Cain went to the music shop last week and tried both and he said
the Gibby is chambered the Epiphone was solid.

i play in a 5 piece classic rock band.
Age ranges from 26 to old me 47.
Weird combo of rockers there.

i play Behringer BX 4500 head 450 watts.
80s MIM Fender BXR cab with 1-15" Eminence Bet 15 A,
1 homemade lil cab with a Pyle Pro PPA 15".
i've used Berhingers for about
7 years. Never let me down live or practice. (BX1200 the other one)
i want a Bugera 550 (model# ?) . It has 4-12AX7s in the preamp section.
and at 550 watts @ 4 ohms don't think i'll ever need more than that.
During practice at the band room i hardly ever turn over 2.
They talked about loudness last night and i replied...
i can turn it down to one, but after that it'll be off. LOL

i hardly ever use the preamp section. Don't have to usually.
Steve plays thru a Marshall JCM 2000 dual lead 4 12 angle w
Studio Les Paul. Cain beats thru a Peavy Classic 50 with a Zakk Wyld Epip.
My rig is blowing their tubes....for real...Steve smoked a power tube
last night. It limped thru but it sounded horrible.
i don't trust all tube amps....Love the sound but they are fragile.
i loved my Fender Bassman 350 all tube but it blew tubes and was too loud. i had bought it new in 1979 or 80 i think.
Back in the 90s i had an Ampeg V2...It was more reliable than the Bassman. But with about 15 tubes i was scared to play live with it.
It was a 1971...Mean and brutal. Bone shakin!

Sorry for the blah blah blah...
i get carried away....i'm a rock junky...LOL

That's right, Jack did play a short scale.
We won't hold it against him for playing a Gibson....LOL
So much for my theory.

i was also wrong about Mustang aftermarket pups.
Duncan makes a replacement OEM for about 80.00 to 100 buck.
They "say" they put out about 8.73 Ks.
If they do, those basses would sound awesome.

U have a great one too WIkissfan!
Enjoy the shop talk!

Interesting to hear that you are happy with your Behringer amp. I was considering one of those but read some bad reviews and changed course. I was always very happy with my Line 6 spider 3 for my strat so I looked into one of those. I can use the foot controller I already have to change sounds now, nothing wild just some delay or "octave" in spots to thicken up the sound. Got to admit that playing with the WAH pedal is fun too sometimes.

That Line 6 300 is pretty booming for it's size, nice combo unit. The only downfall I don't like is the cabinet design. The controls are hanging out there where they could get sheared off pretty easily so I had to use some old school tech and make a cover that I can strap on over the controls to keep them safe, and $80 for a cover to keep it looking good.

Cool basses, that note I don't play always sounds great.

Oh yeah, no put on at all.
Didn't care for the combo bx 1200 cabinet
the pressboard sucks in the sound.
But the amps are bullet proof.

The BX 4500H have these round power transformers in them.
They deliver the goods.
True solid state watts for output.
The eQs maxed out can have noise
but if you're dialed in on your ax you don't need to max the eQ.

i used effects when i was younger.
3 piece groups i'd run cheap over drive pedals
for the lead fill parts...but not more than that.
My faves were Sansamp and a 30 watt Gorilla for a pre-amp.
That was nasty.

i failed to list i also play thru a cheap Seismic Audio 2-10 cab too.
Not bad for the bucks at all.
i've beat that thing for a solid year and still
have the cheapo speakers still kickin with no issues.
i want a Avatar 2-10 with NEOs
but don't have the cabbage for one right now.

My fave cab is the Fender BXR 115
with the eminence beta 15A.
my basses sound like organs thru it.
i play a lot different now that i'm older.
i dig James Jamerson more now than i ever did when i was young.
Goin for the smooth thumb strum tone.

From WASP to Motown...
It's all good!

Don't know much about your type of rig.
May get to try that one day.

Thanks for the exchange.
Dig the shop bass talk!

Have a good one!

hellkat, WI KISSfan,

I've been out of pocket the past few days, so just got caught up on what you guys have been talking about.

I went by the Mom and Pop today to check out the Squier Bronco. What a sweet little bass! It feels so light and easy to play. I really got a kick out of it. The had it priced for $169.00. I think I might just have to grab it based on what I saw and hellkat's glowing recommendations. (Gee hellkat, are you really sure you like Bucky?) :)

WI KISSfan - neat story on your MusicMaster.

Is there a favored year for the MusicMaster bass? Any particular ones to stay away from?

Keep up the discussion guys - I'm enjoying it.

Squires are certainly nothing to shake a stick at. There are hidden gems everywhere, you just have to look.

I love musicmasters; both the guitars and the basses. The body shape is simply too hard to resist, and the short scale is fun to play.

Glad to hear you're happy with your instrument :)

Hey Toronado!

Ur right, you have to look.
The quality differs on each Squier.
Some u'll fine correct on the overall look
but when you look closely at the heel pockets,
dot markers etc you'll find the flaws.
i do think Squiers are Fender rejects.
Which is fine with me...they're a whole lot cheaper
and in dark bars and practice rooms Mustang Sallys
aint gonna care...LOL

The bodys are great! i agree.
i like the no contour shape of Mustangs Broncos & Musicmasters.
It's flat and holds a sustain better.
Like the old slab body Fender basses did.
i think the comfort contours takes away
from the ring of the P and Jazz style basses.

Thanks for stoppin by and joinin in!

Hey RickyD welcome back!

Lemmie think...Hell yeah! LOL

They are very fun to play.
That's a fair average new price.
If ya have an ebay account you may get lucky and find a Bucky for 44.00.
Then dump the saved cabbage into a B&P or Duncan hotrail
humbucker, wire it full for blown 13.0 K, forget the tap,
then you'll have to make your self stop jamming.

Another thing i like about Broncos is the wiring.
The cap. is grounded on the tone.
Grounded to it's self in other words.
The Musicmaster Vista & Squier Ps are capped
between the Vol & Tone pots legs.
The 20th Anniv. P Squiers are like the Broncos.
Cap on tone ground.
Better crisper highs and still get the lows by rolling back on the tone.

Go ahead get it ya know ya want it...LOL

Later Dude!
Great talkin to ya again!

I gotta say this is the best discussion ever on short scales. Usually short scales are looked at as "toys" by the big boys. But I've never been one to care much about what "they" say. I love mine.

Hellkat, the Line 6 is cool in that I can dial in a little or alot of effects. There's a wah pedal that pretty much only gets used when I'm screwing around on my own. The different amp tones are very handy. I have the express pedal so I can only choose from 3 sounds and the volume pedal will double as a wah by clicking it down all the way, and there's a built in tuner.

I basically have 4 pretty simple sounds that I use, #1 is a funkier "slap-tone", #2 is a straight forward rock deeper bass, #3 is the same as #2 except with the octaver turned on-nice filler for intros or during a solo, and #4 is the same as #2 with some longer delay for slow songs. And I love the combo setup, one 15" speaker with a horn. Easy to setup, and I installed casters to make it easier to get around, it's 90 lbs so the wheels are a great feature IMO.

Ricky and Toronado, thanx for stopping by, if either of you have one of these or get one please post some photos. I guess I've thought about a Squier but since I read that the Musicmaster is the "economy" Mustang I've always wanted to snag one of those, who knows. For now the SX is a pretty nice backup, I wish Fender would make a short scale jazz bass...?

That was a pretty awesome looking bass. That vista tone pickup looks just like the Seymor Duncan I put in mine. The big 1/4" magnets make a hell of a difference. I remember when I got that put in and took it to practice for the first time. I plugged it into my Laney 300 watt head I had at the time and without adjusting the volume from the last practice.... that first low E almost blew us all out of the room. So much more output than the old 6 pole strat pup that was in there.

Again, I love that look of the headstocks being painted to match the body.

My Fender headstocks, they all have a little character to them, IMO.

Yes it was...Somebody's gonna be really happy with that one.
i want one of each...(insert wish look here).
My chic would completely flip if i did.
Don't really think they'd be easy to find either way.
That Blue that just sold only makes 1 of 7 Vista MMs i've ever seen.
2 Blacks 2 Pinks 2 Blues 1 White.
In 11 yrs of net search bass sickness.(Got It Bad) No Cure.

i wondered if the Vista pups were special Duncans.
Just got thru beatin mine on some ZZ Top and was lovin the bottom!

Blew em out of the room!
Amazing lil monsters they are!

The stock Broncos have those lil 6 pole pups too.
They are weak and noisy...They're guitar pups, so one can't expect much.

Those painted head stocks are awesome!
Love the ti-die big time!
Great group of axes there WIKissfan!

Enjoy the shop talk!
Have a good one!
