hi- i made the mistake of removing the plastic cover from the 1970's era telecaster bass i have. the pickup was no longer attached by the adjustment screws. i only found two springs in the well. i can easily reattach the pickup to the plastic cover and reasswembvle the whole mess but do i need 4 springs and if not whick pickup posts do i put the 2 springs on? thanks guys. i feel like a total dork regarding this beautiful old instrument. my primary instrument is banjo so i'm out of my usual comfort zone. mw

Welcome!

Frankly, I'm confused. No Telecaster Bass used/uses a plastic cover for the pickup. Would you be able to post a picture of your problem?

As was already stated- Telecaster basses have no plastic pickup covers.

The first version of this bass has a single coil pickup that is exposed with string wrapped around its circumference to protect the Pickup coil windings.
The current Fender Sting bass is similiar.

This original style single coil pickup, is supported by two springs which support the pickup by being placed around the two pickup attachment screws which screw into the body at either end on the pickup. This can be a balancing act to get the springs around the screws and then screwed into the body before they fall out of place. This is what I think the original poster is referring to.

If you have a later version Telecaster Bass- it has a single humbucking pickup and I believe that they have springs between the pickguard and the mounting screws, similiar to what Gibson does with their humbucking pickups that are mounted in full pickguards and not pickup rings.

I hope this clears things up for you.
