elom, nice job on the wikipedia page!

I recently bought my first digital camera. I'll try take some detailed pictures as all I've seen online are full body shots like the one at the top of the wiki page.

It might be fun to have some clear pictures of unique features of the Performer bass, such as the headstock logo and the pickups with the embossed Fender logo on the cover.

Stay tuned...

That would be cool. My Performer is a bit beat up (which I kind of like!) so some detailed pics for wikipedia would be great.

Hi - new member. If you're looking for a 'head count' of Performer basses - I have a brown sunburst Performer bass. First got it on a trade with a 4hp Johnson outboard motor. Then sold it to my cousin then got it back about 4 years ago. Got a few dings but it plays well.

I have a Gunmetal Blue one that I gigged heavily in the 90's. They are very good funk-basses!

Hi! I just stumbled upon this thread by searching 'Fender Performer.' I too am the proud owner of one. I bought a white one brand new in 1985 and she is still with me, beautiful, great tone and in great shape! I gigged with it a lot and it held up great! I have only ever seen one other in person in my life so I knew it was a rare one... sweeeeeeeeeet!

It seems I may one of the lucky owners of an elusive tobacco sunburst Performer.

I found it in the corner of a practice studio in the late '80s in a grubby and uncared for state. I tried it and immediately liked it. I had to cough up £80 for it. Once cleaned it was, and still is, nearly mint.

It is lovely to play, and has a great range of sounds although recording engineers always preferred the sound of my Hohner B2B with the original Hohner humbuckers. Great sharp, bright sound with the TBX turned up to 10, but still a decent solid sound (not quite a precision).

Personally I prefer to play the Performer. Always use XL strings, elites or rotos. Despite thin neck it is a bit neck heavy sitting down, so a 'standing up bass'.

I had a Hohner J-bass and learned to play bass (from guitar) by borrowing a friend's Precision for a month. The Performer is definitely top, and great looking guitar to gig with.

My other bass is a Maya P-style fretless which I like and google suggests may be better pedigree than I realised.

I haven't gigged for about 17 years now :-( but still get to do the odd jam, especially as my daughter is now learning the drums - scarily fast!

Neil

You are all correct. What a neat bass. I have three...don't ask. Tobacco Burst, White (now a warm yellow) and Gun Metal Blue. Outside of my P and J, absolutely my favorite bass. Example, I have one P, two Js and three Performers, the math is a good indication. Missing red and candy green metallic. I think since I have three I may try to collect the whole set. Perhaps the Lounger with the red one pictured would like to sell...lol.

Who would have thought, MIJ, 1986, and that cool to play. John Page did well.

I am pretty sure that is a world record as far as forum members go. Congratulations on owning them. No wonder anyone else can find one, you have them all!

Anyone had a USA Performer Elite?

The MIJ Performer Bass was commonly known as the Performer Standard.

The Performer Elite Bass lacked off the pickguard and sported three active single-coil pickups, 5-way selector switch and an ebony fretboard.

Fender introduced a shortlived 5-string version of the Performer Elite Bass in 1987.

Hi Brio and welcome.

I have no idea how you'd find one locally. Your best bet is to look on ebay. They were only made '85 - '86, and production numbers are thought to be low.

Now here's something for everyone... The one and only Performer V proto.

I have never even seen a Performer Elite 4. Boy, would that would be a find! It is one of only two US production basses prior to 2001 that just never seem to show up.

The picture Modwiz posted clearly shows a Performer Elite V.

I think production of the Elite Performers moved to Japan when the Fullerton plant closed in 1984. The Standard Performer was Japanese-made since its introduction in late 1985.

The Elites sported three pickups as opposed to the 2-pickup Standards; the pickup configuration is pretty identical to that of the Prophecy and HM basses.
