Dear All,

I have a problem with my old (1977) Fender Telecaste humbucker.
It was installed in my new semiacoustic fretless.
It is a wonderfull bass (little similar to a RobAllen Mouse 30, piezo, Labella black nylon etc.))
The real problem is that I asked the luthier to install a singlecoil to the bridge too. The humbucker is at the neck.(It is from an old Aria JB style one) When the 2 picup togehter, it sounds that both are more quiet and less bass.

Do you have any idea what to do. I have heard somethin that (maybe) the way of wiering of the old humbucker is is opposite way than the others ? or the magnet poles are the opposite. Something is against of the to pickup.
Separate they work perfect.

Thanks inadvance.

Jozsef

Welcome.

Bring it back to your luthier and tell him the two pickups are out of phase with each other and ask him to correct it.

I don't think its as easy as just saying the pickups are out of phase.
A Tele bass humbucker has pole pieces coming off of both coils, so which coil are you going to be in phase with?

The Tele humbucker was designed to be a the only pickup on the bass.

I think there is asolution but It may require some creative wiring to get around that phase problem.

It shouldn't hurt to take it back to the guy who did the installation and ask what can be done about it.

Good luck

Oh, I beg to differ on all counts:

The Tele bass humbucker has two coils with the polepieces of both coils all sharing ONE magnet which is the key, not the two coils. These coils are of similar wind strength but of opposite winding and opposite polarity, wired in series. This is what makes a two coiled pickup, "buck hum". And because the coils are wired one to the other, it is now, ONE pickup. So, based on the OP's complaint, the magnet of this ONE pickup is out of phase with the magnet of his bridge pickup. Consequently, one of the two pickup's leads must be reversed or, one of the two pickup's magnets must be flipped over to resolve this.

I hope you are right and it's that simple. I just don't know any "luthier" worth the name who would make such an obvious screw up when they installed the pickups.

I am not sure that the Tele Bass humbucker only uses one magnet for both coils.

Realize that this pickup is very different from the Gibson sidewinder PU used in the EB series of basses.
I will have to have another look at my HB Tele bass

I can tell you that even when a P-bass pickup is installed with a Jazz pickup in the bridge, there is some slight difference in the performance of two of the strings relating the the different windings of each half of the p-bass pickup.
Not exactly "out of phase" but still different.
Noting that and the uniqueness of the Tele bass humbucker, I thought that he would have more to do to fix this problem, but maybe I am wrong.
I hope so.

Hi,
It is not so easy I understand. The pickup is just a magnet and wire, and how many diffrent sound. The Tele Humbucker reallly something unic. In the past I thought it is a sound "under the pillow", but good bass, good amp, etc, brings out the advantages.

The one what I really need is the possiblity to mix a bridge pu to the neck tele one. I put it before to a high end service, and I know they are really professionals, changed cable, put some unti resonant textile to the back of the humbucker, sounds great, but to have another next to it ???
I would need somebody who installed this configuration with succes, and could give advice too. Best Regards, Jozsef
