Hej,
I currently play a bass with roundwound strings and I wondered whether other types of strings are worth trying.

Well from my experience the rounds are great. I switched to flats a few months ago and personal I like them better. It's really all about what tone you want. I wanted more of a bassy thump an the flats get that. Were rounds give a sharp punchy sound. If you can Handle the rounds then you may go for them depeding on what you play(punk/rock). But if they hurt to much flats are way better to me anyway. So it's sharp and punchy and maybe painful, or mellow and thumpy and probably smooth and easier to play.

Haha, yeah it's pretty painfull, my fingertips are sore like hell ... are flats better for the fingers? I thought it's just a matter of sound.

Painful?- i have suffered worse blisters on my plucking fingers with flatwounds that I have ever had with round wounds.

The real issue is how do like the sound and how good is your amp?
If you can turn up the amp and play with a lighter touch, either string type can do the job. If you are struggling to hear yourself and then play harder, you will tend to get blisters on your fingers.

Flats contact more of your fingertips so they will tend to give your fingers blisters faster.
The real appeal of roundwounds, when they became popular in the early 70's, was to get more bass highs in your bass sound so that your bass lines could be heard more clearly.

Flat wounds sound well....flat to me. Unless they are on an upright. Or a fretless.
I love playing upright basses.

I've had flats on mine, but I always go back to stainless rounds. It fits the sound for the music I play :)

Flats were tougher on my fingers, not much, but there was a difference.

So, it's a matter of taste and sound, try 'em out. Decide which one you like yourself. Have fun doing so.
