Hi all, I've got a 68 tele bass that's burgundy with a B neck. My friend tells me it's not the original paint but: The original pickguard corroded and cracked to nothing a few years back. isn't that a common problem with the original laquer reacting to the pearloid pickguard? That and the paint sure looks original. I'm reluctant to take the neck off and have a closer look. I've had it twelve years and always have a pro set it up when needed.
Also the bass is a heavy one with a B neck. Definately not a slim, wide C neck like on my Pbass. It's got a silver Fender logo like on my 66 Pbass, solid maple neck with the skunk stripe. Most tele basses I see are blond, C necks that don't weigh as much as this one. It's got oval tuners also, a bit strange. I'm hoping someone out there knows what the deal with this is.
Thanks for any input, HoboMike.

I think Telecasters colors were Blonde, Sunburst, Black, Blue Flower, Pink Paisley and Lake Placid Blue. The original pickguards were single ply nitro cellulose, the perloid guard came after. Oval tuners are common on Teles.

To the extent of my knowledge i've never heard of or seen a Burgundy Mist Tele bass coming from that time. Any bass you see with that color was an post-factory addition because that was not one of the stock colors that was offered at the time. Although it's a great color and would probably look killer on a '68 Tele =[ Fender didn't let us have it.

Lets remember that custom colors can change dramatically over time.
I have a candy apple red precision from the early 70s that looks burgundy from the yellowing of the clear coat.
Not Burgundy mist by a long shot, but the original poster said burgundy, not burgundy mist.
I am not saying that it wasn't refinished, but I would like to see at least a picture of it before drawing any conclusions.

There were a fair number of Tele basses done in Candy Apple Red and that single ply pickguard went to triple ply white after the first year -1968.

These Tele bass PGs were cut with no bevel on the edge and left rough.

I get where you're coming from, actually right before you posted that I was about to post something similar because of the fact that I had encountered such a bass at the local GC in the used section which was stellar, but yeah I didn't think of that at first haha.
