I have owned both Precisions and Jazzes. Just from the sheer number of imitations and similarly looking models, the Jazz Bass has to be the obvious winner.

One thing about the Precision that can't be beat though: you can't hardly go wrong on a bass that only has one volume and tone. As much as I love my Jazz, there are some tone settings on it that I avoid, to the extent that I actually sold a Jazz at one point to get a Precision because I got tired of all the knobs. Go figure.

What exactly do all those switches on the Jag bass DO?
There's an interactive model of the Jaguar here that really lays it out.

I agree that the Precision is best, but I really enjoy my Mustang. I prefer the short scale neck, even with my large hands. One volume pot, one tone pot, simply set it, and forget it!

There's a certain beauty to the simplicity of the Mustang. Mine is a fine bass in its own right and sounds close enough to a P-Bass to suit me. With that, plus a short scale Warwick fretless and a Bass VI I feel pretty well equipped to handle any bass chores that come my way.

i gotta standard precision and a standard jazz...i love the jazz,i love the two basses equal, theyre charactors..the necks widths are both great, i cant choose which i like better, but the tone factor.............the precision is the best. man,the jazz is great, but you can get crappy wirery tone outta it,and it isnt nice..with the precision no matter what the settings the knobs are at,it sounds great..PRECISION IS THE BEST!!!!!
(p.s. also the wide neck is very good, jazz bass players should try it)

I have to agree with Jazz Bass due to the sounds available and the feel of the neck. I do prefer the Precision body, but the sounds are most important to me.

I vote for P-J bass as the 2nd greatest (P body and neck pickup, with J neck and bridge pickup).

The Precision Bass is the classic, but I have to go with a 2 pickup Fender bass.
