I just acquired a USA JP-90 (S/N says 90-91 date) and it has a truss rod that just turns, like a bolt sliping on a nut. I was wondering if it has just been stripped at the bottom, or what? THis instrument has had very little wear, but the action is too high. It just wont adjust as-is. Any opinions?
(I haven't worked on a truss rod since my 1966 Jazz. )

Thanks!

Truss rod problems are the worst.
You have to have the bass carefully examined to see where the problem is.

The rod nut is either stripped, the shaft is stripped or the rod is broken.
The first two can be fixed by replacing the nut, using the stewart macdonald rod rescue kit, which is not cheap ( $250 approx) to drill down the sides of the rod and expose more thread and then threading the nut farther down the rod to again put tension on the truss rod.

If the rod is broken, you have to ask your self if a JP-90 is worth the money it would cost to replace the rod.
If the rod is broken, I would investigate getting a replacement neck.
These are not cheap answers, but that is what you're facing.

Good luck
