well, a really good freind of mine has a 1970 something fender musicmaster that has never had strings on it. i really want to ask if he would sell it but first of all, dealing with freinds is awkward and second, it was in his grandfathers music shop (so it has sentimental value)

if he decides to sell it, how much should i offer?

I don't know about price but make sure the neck is straight and has no issues. That is a long time to be bolted up with no tension.

That shouldn't be a problem, in and of itself--but I find it odd that it never had strings--wouldn't it have left the factory that way?

Maybe I misunderstood.

Any way--yes do check the neck.

As to price?
I'm not an expert, so I'll refrain, but I have an idea of how high I'd go--and it probably wouldn't be enough.

If he decides to sell it. He should come up with a price. That's the way it should work. If you want to make an offer, offer what you can afford to pay, and have no reservations if you later find out that it was a great price.

It is up to sellers to name their price. If they leave it up to a buyer, then they cannot complain if the buyer took advantage of the situation.

Since the bass has no strings you are taking a chance that the neck is not warped or damaged. Offer accordingly, friend or not.

just (yesterday) sold a '75' Musicmaster with neck issues to GC and got a new Mustang, got $510 for the Musicmaster!!!! The neck was so bent the strings were 1/4" high. So even with problems the older guitars have value.
