Well you know this is all opinion, but I happen to think my opinion is a very sound one.
Being a guitarist you're probably going to play the bass with a pick. The P-bass might be better for this as it typically has a bassier sound. Mark Hoppus has really great tone picking a P-bass. It's also easy to operate with one pickup, one volume, one tone. The Fender P-bass is classic, built like a tank, and accepted as pretty much the standard in electric bass, as it was the first bass ever you know.
I personally prefer the Jazz Bass. I play with my two right fingers most of the time, and having a bridge pickup allows me to get a nice punchy growly tone even with my fingers. That's the big difference. The Jazz Bass is just so universal. You can play any style with it and do it well. And if you just crank the neck pickup and tone and silence the bridge pickup, you've pretty much got a P-bass right there. Sounds great with a pick or fingers. Also sounds much better for slap bass because putting the neck and bridge pickups together gives you the bass thump and treble pop you need in perfect balance.
Generally I like to call Precision Bass tone "plunky" while the Jazz Bass sounds beautifully "growly." The Jazz Bass also looks sleeker and is a bit more comfortable to play I think. But the P-bass is almost always cheaper to buy. If I was looking to buy I would just find the best deal on either bass in the best condition possible pre-owned.

You can NOT get a P-Bass tone from a J-Bass.

You can NOT get a J-Bass tone from a P-Bass.

That is why Fender makes both.

There are many P/J arrangements out there but after owning about 5 different P/J basses I've yet to find one that sounds exactly like a P or a J. They just sound different.

If I could have only one bass it would be a First Generation Precision like the '51 Reissue.

One thing I forgot to mention about the two basses is that the Jazz Bass has a thinner neck than the Precision Bass. The Jazz is 1.5'' at the nut and the Precision is usually 1.65 or 1.75'' at the nut. The Jazz Bass neck is so lusciously slim. I have 8 basses and the Jazz neck still feels like home. I do appreciate the Precision neck though because it feels flatter and gives you more space down by the nut. So it depends on whether you're used to a bigger neck or a small neck.
