Hello fellow musicians. I am acutally a guitar player, but I'm looking to buy a Bass guitar simply for recording. I'm not a gigging musician. I am more of a hobbyist. I don't know anything about Bass guitars so I was hoping you all could give me some suggestions. I would like to have a decent Bass guitar, but I don't want to break the bank. Any suggestions on a Bass guitar in the $300 - $500 range? Please keep in mind that I'm only a hobbyist and I plan on using it for recording purposes only. All you Bass players please chime in and give me your advise/input. Thanks!!

Also, I would like to add that I am into many different styles of music. So I guess I would need a Bass that is versatile. I'm not opposed to shopping on Ebay. So if I could maybe find a nicer Bass on Ebay I could get a decent Bass for less money. Any help would be appreciated!!

hi project,

i also a guitar player. for recording at home i use a cheap sammick jazz bass and it works fine. there alot of cheap and mid prices brand out there. the best is you check some basses in your local guitar store and decide what feels good for you.

good luck :D

Thanks for the reply!! I'm not really interested in going out and trying Bass guitars. It's not really that important to me. So a Jazz Bass is versatile? What's the difference in a Jazz Bass and a Precision Bass?

Here are 2 fantastic basses for a great price. I have a VM P-Bass and love it.

Since you are going to be using it primarily for recording, you need a bass that has very good RFI rejection because you don't want to record hum and buzz. Humbucking pickups such as a P-bass or Music Man types work great. Also the Ibanez SRX series are very low noise since they are a lot like a Musicman. Fender Jazz basses record well but you have to watch out for the single coil noise when you solo either pickup.

Active EQ or even fully active pickups are great for recording because you'll get a much higher output which often allows you to get a usable level on a high impedance mixer input without having to use a direct box or Sans Amp/Bass Pod. Three band EQ is desirable but two band is ok since you can tweak the mids on the console during mixing.

Active EQ basses with humbucking type pickups such as the Fender Big Block P-bass, American Precision Bass DeIuxe and Mexican Precision Bass Special come to mind as Fender basses that would make great recording basses.

I prefer rosewood fingerboards for recording. The Fender Precion Bass Special is very close to being in your price range brand new!
