i'm looking to expand my bass playing, and therefore am interested in purchasing and electric upright. anybody got any advice on make, model, etc? i'm looking for one with the double bass scale, not the bass guitar scale.

If you want an upright, depending on what kind of music you play, you'll probably be best off buying a real upright and installing a pickup! The older Engelhardt models were hit and miss, but they've really made some improvements for a moderately priced USA made upright. The SWINGMASTER is a gorgeous blonde one for about $1600 street price. I know a guy who has one and he can really tear it up and it sounds better to me than my old King ever did! I played a King upright that cost three times what the Engelhardt costs. The King was laminated and the Engelhardt Swingmaster isn't. so it is lighter than the King. Shadow makes good upright pickup systems. Plan on about 200 additional for that

If you want a super compact one I know a guy in an electric jazz outfit in Charlotte that bought a NS brand Basically it is a neck on a stand. It isn't quite the same as a real upright, but plays the same. The YAMAHA upright with the removable sides is cool looking. But it doesn't sound the same as a real upright either.

For the money it will be hard to beat the Engelhardt Swingmaster in blonde.

thanks for the input. i intend it most for jazz use. pizz playing, probably very little bowing. as much as i would love to have a real upright, i fear my lifestyle wouldn't allow for an instrument that requires that much maintenance. that is a sweet price for an upright, though.
