Hey All,
While I've been around the Fender forums for a while now, this is the first time I've posted in any of the bass forums (so Hola to all you bass players out there!).

Ok...I'm about 99.9% sure this isn't actually a Fender bass, but hopefully you folks will be forgiving here. I purchased this at a guitar show here in Northern Ohio yesterday for $30 and I'm trying to figure out what she is as I'm refinishing her. Other than Yamaha tuning keys, there weren't really any identifying marks on this sucker...but then I just sanded off at least 4 different coats of paint!

Between the phallic symbol headstock and the odd looking pickups, hopefully someone can make sense of this for me...

It's worth noting that I don't think the volume/tone knobs are in their original positions...after I got the paint stripped there were two more holes in the body that had been plugged. I'm not sure if something was moved or if this had 5 controls...a bit hard to say.

And by the way yes, she has been thru a fire (amongst other things). I do have other pics if needed but hopefully being a bit odd, someone might spot this right away. I -know- I've seen that style of headstock before but I just can't remember where or on what.

I'm grateful for any thoughts on helping me solve my newest mystery.

Thanks!
Jim

I don't rec. the headstock but that may not be original to the bass.
I am going to guess that it is a Kawai bass. The body looks very similiar to a Kawai bass that I own although my bass has a 3+1 headstock like a Musicman.

I believe Kawai made a bass with pickups like those that was an active Alembic knock-off.

Why don't you post some pics of the stripped body? Then we can have a better look at what that bass was originally.

Hey BC,
Actually the folks over at ActiveBass.com nailed it down for me. It's a Yamaha "Motion B" and yes, that is how the headstock is supposed to look. I'm still in the process of stripping it so once I get that done, I'll probably get more pics (if not once I get it refinished I'll get some shots posted), but the ID is taken care of :D

Peace,
Jim

I'm glad that you found out what it is.

What color was it originally?
How does it sound?
