There is one on the magnificent Bass VI by Fender and it works fine, within limitations of not getting multi-half-step stupid.

They do !!! ... Steinberger made one ... Never took off !!! But Why ???? Your a bassit, you silly rabbit not a lead guitarist !!! ...Sorry went on a rant there ... Try using a lighter gauge string and tease the strings or a fretless.... I am a professional bassist and have played with a wammy bar, but it sounds like crap ... You would sound like "Shakie Jake", plus you could use effects to acheive that sound anyway ...

you can do it yourself but theres a chence of messing up your bass cause you would have to cut you own hole next to the pick ups

kahler makes one and Les Claypool uses it on his 4 string so it is pretty good I can assume.

One case to think about:

A colleague's son was given his Dad's Squire bass and just HAD to put a bar on it to make it look unique and cool. He and a friend from school looked into it, got the kit and did the work themselves. Nice job, looked good and was effective - up until the point at which he was jamming with some buddies and pulled the bar up-scale just a little too far. The heavy "E" string tension split the headstock between the "E" string tuner and the truss rod, sheared off a bridge screw and ruined a fairly nice bass. It costs him $$$$$ to have it properly repaired, so if anyone does do the modification, watch that up-scale tension. The "E" string doesn't go up scale much more than the "E" tuning that it is designed for without tweaking parts all along the neck.

Yah thats not good because the bass wasnt designed for the tremolo but I've seen years ago basses which come stock with the tremolo bridge.....

I wouldnt try to install a tremolo bridge to a bass that wasnt designed for it anyway :)

The person I think of is les claypool and the whammy bar on his bass it's awsome. And I know a whammy bar is not for everyone but if you want one go for it.Most people like myself does'nt want to be a sit in the background and just pluck around bass player. Many of the great bass players over the years have broken these boundries like Les Claypool,John Enwistle, and Geddy Lee have all showed that a bass can do a lot more than everybody expects.

There really should be whammy bars on basses. It's not fair that guitars have whammy bars, and when you're on stage and you want to make a change in your bass's sound, you don't have a whammy bar there to do it while the lead guitarist is showing off his whammy bar. Only bad thing about installing a whammy bar on your bass is that you might mess it up if you don't do it properly.................. 8) 8) 8) 8) 8) 8) 8) 8) 8) 8) 8) 8)

In the mid '90s Carvin offered it as part of their option...I've played with a used one at a music store in Allentown, PA...It was, well, a novelty for me. It's cool, but I wouldn't have any use for it.
