A lot of the rockabilly and psychobilly folks use a double bass. I'd have a double bass, if it weren't for the prices. I once noodled around on an acoustic/electric double bass at Mars Planet (now Sam Ash), in Indianapolis, and shocked a couple of teens when they heard the bass line for "Money" and looked, and discovered that it was being played on a double bass. I don't know what was so shocking about it...the notes are in the same place, whether it's bass guitar or double bass. :)

I was principal double bass for the local symphony for a few years. It was a lot of fun, but I don't miss carrying that ol' doghouse around!

It's on my list for my semi-retirement in two years. Meanwhile, I do have a short scale (EB0) and long scale (J-bass) fretless to work with.

I played violin in 7th and 8th grade and wanted to switch to double bass in high school. Small problem: the school only had one to loan out and it was between me (very short and slender) and my friend (tall and average build). The teacher decided that since I already had a violin and Paul was much more the right size for the bass, that's the way it would go. After that, on into rock and guitar ... then many years of corporate life ... so now I want to go back to the beginning and give it a shot.

I do for my modern country band. Switch between double and 5'ers depending on the tune. People love the double!
