I have a Precision and they are not good for slap bass (i might be doing it wrong though) i think Jazz bass would be better because the frets are closer together than the precision so you can play faster easier.

Being a peppers fan he's gunna want the jazz, though the precision has the punchier sound which is more desirable by bassists

The frets on a Precision bass are the same distance apart as a Jazz Bass.
They are both 34" scale basses. The Jazz bass usually has a narrower neck, which is probably what you meant.

A Jazz with round wound low action setting is much better due to the pick up configuration as you acheive more fret sound when slapping. Its the 60 - 40 rule on front to back pick-up setting. Try it out at your local Fender music store .... You will see !!!

I've tried slap on both the Jazz and the Precision and which i own the FSR hotrod jazz it plays AMAZINGLY when i slap, really gets some great tones out of there although as BcBassman clearly stated up there it has a slimmer neck, and although not that much it can make a difference from the Precision bass when trying to slap on either one but it's personal preference really in my opinion i would try both if i were you first.

The other advantage of a jazz bass is that when you have both pickups on full, you have a slight midrange scoop because of phasing between the pickups. (whenever you put two signals in parallel, some overlapping frequencies subtract, and most of the overlap is around 600 hrz).

A lot of people like having a midrange scoop in slap, and the jazz gives you a natural one.

I'd go with a J-bass typically. However I bought an MIJ Squire P-Bass a couple of months ago and the original owner had the strings set (too) low. While decent for slap, it also has far too much rattle; I have a hunch that once I raise the strings a bit, not so good for slap anymore.

Well either ways you go you can still slap on ANY type of Bass guitar, be it Fender Jazz Bass or Fender Precision Bass. you just need to ask yourself two questions: "What type of Style do I want to play?" and "Which bass am I more comfortable with?" Let's face it, if you are a Bass player, slapping should be second nature to you. any good Bass Guitar play should be able to slap on any type of bass you give them. Myself personally, I have a Rare 1996 Fender "Cowpoke" Bass Guitar that I had sanded down and refinished to look like The Beatles George Harrison's "Rocky" Guitar. Technically my "Cowpoke" Bass is a Precision Bass, although it does have both a split coiol AND a jazz bass pick-up on it along with a Lee Quan BADASS II Bass bridge on it. Just remember, no matter what kind of Bass you have, personalize it to mae it more comfortable for YOU and keep working on your slap techniques, turst me you WILL get better in no time. (Also, what really helps is just watch your favourite Bass players play their basses and focus on the finger movements and their techniques)

You should get a bass with a bridge pickup, i've heard some good slapping tones out of a presicion bass, but it's too midrangy though. Hope this helps...
