Hey all! When going fretless, how important is the rosewood fingerboard? Can an all maple neck make for a good fretless experience. I love the all maple neck on my strat, and my fretted P-bass has a rosewood fingerboard. When I am ready for a new bass, I think I might want something fretless. Seems like most fretless models have a rosewood fingerboard. Just wondering what your experiences have been. Thanks.

My fretless has a rosewood fingerboard and it sounds GREAT! It is worth the investment and sounds great. I don't know how important the rosewood is though in my opinion I wouldn't change a thing about my frettless Musicman StingRay.

imho if you're considering fretless the choices for fingerboard from best to worst are ebony pau ferro rosewood maple. As a string bassist as well as electric bassist I think ebony gives the best combination of resonance and tone. Unfortunatley it's also expensive and not available on most stock Fenders. I have a fretless neck with pau ferro and it is a great wood, very hard and good tone. I have nothing against maple for fretless but I think it is too bright if your goal is a true warm fretless tone.

The Fender fretless Standard Jazz with rosewood and flats is very, very hip, especially for the price.

'Got the strings only a sliver high and play it like a horn.

Such fun! Brighten and darken your sound with controls and amp, don't worry about the wood.

Fender made maple fingerboard fretless necks in the 1970's. Good ones are awesome, but the quality control wasn't so good back then, and a lot are sloppy. There are recent Japanese reissues of Fender maple neck fretless basses, but you either need to go to Japan, or find a way to grey market them in.
