I just started playing bass and after some of the great info from folks here, I decided to just go get the affinity jazz bass pack to get started. I was very very impressed with the quality. Mind you, it helps to know how to set it up properly and I recommend getting new strings immediately. The pickups are the achilles heal in the guitar, and the amp is a little poor but not bad just for practice. The price is right and I know that I can donate the whole kit to a boys & girls club or something when I'm done and feel good about it. I'll move up to a MIM at the very least in the next few months. but the kit is nice, get it set up right, and just practice. I would not use it to play a gig tho!

I've noticed a difference between the jazz and the precision bass.

The jazz has 3 buttons of control:

- Volume 1. (Neck Pickup),
- Volume 2. (Bridge Pickup),
- Master Tone

The precision has only 2:

- Volume
- Tone

Which of them is better?

I wouldn't say one is better than the other. Just go play both and you'll find they have a different sound. I got the jazz mainly coz i've always liked the look of it and thought i'd have more control with my tone by having two pickups but to tell you the truth, I wish i'd gotten the P bass, coz I think I like the punchy sound it produces more and it would be more the sound that I was wanting to play. The jazz is a smoother rounder sound in my opinion. I do love the neck on the Jazz tho. it's so slender and easy to play.

The necks on these affinity's are the real gem. in this price range I never thought i'd have such a nice comfortable well made neck. no jaggies on the frets to cut you up, smooth and well made fretting all the way up and down. even the nut is cut right! The new worm gear tuners were a nice surprise too and the thing just stays in tune all the time!!

I'm going to learn bass, almost from scratch. So, as i'm not a 'pro', I think that to start I could buy the Fender Squier Bass Pack. What do you think about it?
Is it good for a begginer like me? :D
Thank you in advance...

P.S. - Here it is:

Well if you are serious about playing buy a decent bass as you will only want to trade up to a Jazz or P-Bass ... If you loose intrest ... well a good grade bass will sell for more than a Squire ... No I am not a Fender salesman, it just make sense to make a commitment in getting a great quality Fender insturment ... New novice bassist need a good action, since you will experience some finger fatigue as a new player ... I always recommend measuring your hands too to know what neck fits best ...

Yea, I learned on a crappy one at first too, it reselembled a bow rather than a bass... Trust me, Fender sells better guitars for a reason, they are made better, hardware and sound quality and fit and finish too ... Buy a decent American issue bass or even a Mexican at first ... I would skip the Squire, although Fender has come a long way with Squire brand, spend the cash and get a great bass instead of just a good one ...

Welcome to the world of Fender Bass my freind "There nothing like a Fender Bass its what players play ...

I have the Jazz beginner pack. Nicely done by Squire. I've been happy with it so far. After about 6 months, put some Rotosound nickel strings on it. I've not had the time to devote to it like I should. Still enjoy it though. Good luck with your four string endeavours.

I have a Squier Precision Special (it was the only left-handed Squier and I wanted to buy something as close to 'original' Fenders as possible but I was on a budget) and I'm absolutely satisfied with it.

It's been half a year since I began playing and learning and now I'm in a band and have begun experimenting with the different volumes of the 2 pickups (specials have a split P at the neck and a J in bridge position) and realised I would prefer a P to the Jazz Bass...

Anyway, there have been words about the beasts themselves but what about the Fender Rumble Amps? Do you bass pack-owners like them? :)

I bought a Squier Bass Pack back in 1999, and it's been a good bass to play, even after I eventually bought a Fender Standard Precision Bass. What I got was, an Affinity P-bass, Squier BP-15 bass combo (15W), an instrument cable and an instruction video. Sometime in 2000, I bought a Vox T-25 bass combo (25W), along with a Squier Standard Fat Telecaster. A couple of years ago, I also added a used Line6 Bass POD to my lineup, and also now have a Fender Electric VI (Bass V) and an Epiphone EB3 SG Bass in my collection. Somewhere along the line, I'm planning to add an Ampeg B200R to my collection, although I still kick myself in the butt for not buying a Vox T-60 bass combo (60W) before they went out of production.

In the coming future, when I can get myself to stop being lazy about it, I need to A-B my Squier and Fender basses, to decide which one gets flat wound strings, and which one gets another set of round wound strings.

Matt

I started with a Squier p-bass pack and it served me well. But if you continue to play bass after becoming good you're gonna wanna upgrade.
