Hi to all,
Probably I'm one of the first owner of a Fender Roscoe Beck 5 in Italy.
I bought this bass preordering it before it was available in any shop!

I'm so happy of this bass that I'm wondering why the 5 strings version, maybe the best ever fender 5 strings, is now out of production...

Maybe I have to be prepared to preorder a new versione of this bass? ;-)

Someone in Fender staff could tell me some "out of scenes secret"?

I've only ever seen those basses on the Fender website, never been in a shop that stocks them and never seen anybody playing them! What's it like to play?

I really believe it is the best Fender 5 ever.
You have two double wound pick-ups that offer you series/parallel/single configuration separately, offering you a pletora of sound from standard JazzB to The most modern Hum. Sound is a little bit darker than a standard Jazz bass but with stainless steel round wound you can cut throu any genre and band, even against the loder guitar player. Anyway it's a really "Real Man playing Real Music", so it got a big and fat neck, it's heavy and works really great with high action boosting a really impressive sustain for a bolt-on.
Don't think RB5 like a modern bass, it's more properly definable as a "Vintage Mdern Minded Bass", even if you have some touch of modern instruments like the eavy, totally adjustable bridge. I bought it in 1997 and it's my main bass since this year, even if I had "modern" 6 string bass and also a Reggie Hamilton 4...
I couldn't immagine a more flexible, reliable, solid and grooving passive fender bass!

So, Fender staff: Why it's out of production? What are you preparing with Roscoe?

Sounds awesome! I'd love to get my hands on one to play now.

I have to agree with the comments above, in my opinion the 10 years spent in development really shows. It's so good that I bought two :D

From what I understand, The RBV production is suspended pending string tree, bridge and control knob revisions - the original Gotoh bridge is no longer available, as the the "black hat" control knobs. The string tree is being revised to anchor the E string in addition to the A D and G strings.

Perhaps a Fender rep will concur or correct me?

It's not a lightweight but balances well on and off strap. The big neck is comfortable with the assymmetrical profile. If you get a chance to try one I'd definitely recommend it.

I'm seriously thinking about picking up the 4 string version in crimson red with a rosewood neck. I've always loved translucent red as a color and I really like the looks and features of this bass.

Do the 4 string version come with a painted headstock like the 5's do?

The Fender RB4 does have a matching head-stock.

Bass Player Magazine: 5 out 5 for tone!

It nails it (except they did update the neck depth... not as thick/a little thinner - as 1997)...

Here is a link from "Roscoe Beck's" website:

Hey guys, I'm brand new on this board and I just found this thread - I've got a Roscoe Beck 5-string and I have to say it's just the most amazing bass. As someone else mentioned earlier on this thread, it nails the vintage Jazz tone, but I can also get a Precision-like tone too when I solo the neck pickup in parallel mode. I string it with TI Jazz Flats and use Ampeg amplification so my sound is true old-school.

Thump!

Good to find this board..............

Is the RBV ever going to be reissued? I see above a reference to revisions - good grief, how long do revisions take anyway? I mean - a revised string tree and new knobs!
I sure would love to see the Roscoe Beck 5 available again. Until then, I'm sure glad I didn't sell mine!

I've seen a couple of pics showing the RB5 with the updated bridge and chrome Tele knobs on Flickr in the past, but apparently these basses were made only a couple of years (2004-2005) and never went into general production. Roscoe is mostly seen playing a maple-neck RB5 with a Crimson Red finish and a 3-ply black pickguard.
