Back in the mid seventies I almost (should have) bought a what I believe was a late sixties Tele bass. It was creme color with gold paisley that went under a clear pickguard. It had an old style non-humbucking pickup and a birdseye maple neck. I have never seen one of these since and wondered if anyone had details on what it may be.

In the early 80's, I played a really nice Tele bass. Could not afford it, since I was in college. The bass had a really clear E string - not muddy at all. I thought the Tele bass would be so much more unique, than another Precision or jazz Bass. I wish I had bought it ...

It may have been a faded Pink Paisley Telecaster bass. Telecaster basses and Telecaster guitars were made in 1969-70 in pink paisley or blue flower finishes which actually used wallpaper as part of the finish.

They were slow sellers at the time and now are quite valuable.

They reissued the Pink paisley and Blue Flower in a Japanese manuf. contoured body 54 Precision reissue and yes they and the original had through body strings.

I'm a bit confused and need some clarification on Telecaster bass pickups. Mine is the big chrome one with "Fender" on it and 4 slotted screw (staggered) pole pieces, one for each string. I always thought this was a single coil pickup. So jwin56, is that what you mean by "old-style non-humbucking pickup? Or is mine a "humbucking pickup" and not the same as what you were referring to?

Yours is the humbucking pickup version of the Telecaster bass that came out in 1973. Chrome pickup with poles that are two and two. That is actually a Seth Lover designed pickup ( he designed the original humbuckers for Gibson in the 50s) and that pickup is a monster.

The original Telecaster bass pickup or single coil pickup is the same or similar to what was used on the original Precision bass in 1952- 57.
It is also very similar to the pickup on the Sting bass.

I hope that helps clarify what you have.

Ok ..... It was a Telecaster version 1 bass, American version came only in Red Paisley and Blue Flower 1968 - 1969 read pg 12 of THE FENDER BASS BOOK by Klaus Blasquiz available @ Borders for full story ... Fender $@! made some as well ... I own a American version one of these rare vintage basses in pristine condition and amoug us collecting afficionados it was only produced for 4 years by Fender. Due to its very limmited sucess the CBS R&D (A soon to retiring 80 year old - Freddie Tavaris) team thought it was rather uncouth so they discontuned it .... Well you know how CBS was during those days ... Money, Money, Money .... Nothing I use in the studio sounds quite like it !!! ... Wow what a tone but its physically too heavy for club use and play ...

I own a 1968 Telecaster bass with a maple neck and the pink paisley finish. I have the ash tray for the bidge and the cover for the pickup. The original pick up looked more like the ones on a Telecaster or Stratocaster. It was replaced with the first EMG bass pickup developed as a prototype in the early 1970's here in Santa Rosa, Ca, by the founders of the EMG pickup company. It was installed on my bass for free as they got to try out their new pickup and I got a free pickup out of the deal (the original fender pickup was broken). I may be able to get one of my sons to help me email or post a picture as I am not very computer savy.

I hope they didn't alter the pickup route to install that EMG!
If they did- you have taken a hit on the value of your bass.

The bass could be restored if you have the original pickup.
I'm sure that its a great bass and I'm sure everybody would love to see it!

Man I remember when they couldn't give those bases away!

They enlarged the area where the pickup is mounted. The EMG is square and the original is narrow and longer.
What does this mean?:
Don't forget where one is...
2, 3, and 4 are good to keep tabs on too!
Thanks. lfs

My motto has to do with keeping time when playing bass.

Most bass players are playing in 4/4 time. It's a good idea to be able to know where you are in a measure of music to get the right feel in your bass parts.

Sting seems to like writing in 5/4 time. Messes me up!

If you want to restore it to original condition. It will take a real talented luthier to fill that Pickup route and match the Pink Paisley finish.

I wish you could post a picture of your bass.
