I looked in the Fender site today, and no custom shop Bass VI. I've been looking to get one for about a year. The closest thing to it is the Schecter Hellcat VI, but that's not really in the same league. And the Jaguar HH Baritone is a fine instrument, just not the same kind of thing at all.

weird, you're right. it's not there any more.
hope they're just going to shift it to a regular line instrument instead of custom shop, but that's just wishful thinking.

i'm sure it'll be back in some way or another. until then, ebay?

I woulda bought the Jaguar Baritone special e-e in a heartbeat. Love the Japanese Jag stuff. Bass VI too expensive. HH nice, but not the same thing.

Seems eBay would be the ticket, or luck otherwise. I wasn't even looking for a Bass VI, when I found mine (1996 MIJ model) at the Sam Ash in Indianapolis. At the time, I was looking for my first tube combo amp, and had saw they had a Fender Hot Rod De Ville 410, when I walked in, but I had to "test drive the utilities" before getting into any guitar/amp test drives. On my way back to the Fender amp, I decided to check out what basses they had, and I saw the Bass VI between two Jaguar Basses. I nearly missed it, had I not noticed the 3 pickups.

So I tried out the Hot Rod De Ville 410, with a Gretsch Electromatic 5125 plugged in, and was starting to seriously consider buying the Gretsch (DeArmond pickups, unlike the cheaper 5120 model), but I'd also decided to try a $400.00 Carlos Robelli hollow body (I was also looking for a rockabilly box, at the time), so I put the Fender amp on standby, and put the Gretsch back on its wall hook. When I plugged in the Carlos Robelli box, and took the amp off standby, the most ungodly feedback started eminating from the amp, and there really wasn't anything I could do to stop it, except to turn the amp off. I told the sales guy, who happened to be right next to me, "time for me to try out that Bass VI."

I plugged the Bass VI into a 25W bass combo (I forget what make/model), and pretty much fell in love with what I heard. The clincher was when I ended up creating parts for two of my original instrumentals, while just jamming along, making up things as I went. Needless to say, instead of leaving Sam Ash with a good idea of what to go back for/buy elsewhere if I find it again (in the case of the Gretsch and Fender amp), I ended up leaving Sam Ash with a Fender Bass VI. Eventually, I did find my first tube combo (Peavey Classic 50/212), and a rockabilly box (Peavey JF2 EX), so all is well in my small corner of the universe.

Matt

'Believe a telephone call or personal letter inquiring exactly to the status of the Custom Shop Bass VI is in order. There was a brand new one at a show in metro Chicago last August.

If they have gotten rid of the Bass VI for now, I'm sure there is a reason, like nobody's buying it, or, they are losing money on it. Jerry Jones has a nice American made "Longhorn, short-scale" 30 inch bass for about $1300. It's basically a Dano in slightly different clothing. Likewise, the new Danelectro has a Bass 4--it sounds nice--but it's no P Bass. And Schecter makes the Hellcat VI, which is v. similar to a Bass VI, without whammy bar. It's about $600. How good is it?? Wish I could find one. All these basses are low demand, let's face it, but very cool. And, watching the Super Bowl Halftime show, was the younger guy in the "E Street" Band playing a Jaguar Baritone Special?? Looked like it to me.

'Remember talking with a guy at an August '09 guitar show in metro Chicago; there is a Dano 6-string baritone with a 30-inch scale which can have the nut and neck and bridge adjusted for octave guitar use (read: Bass VI scale and tuning.

Bet of fortune.

I think that they dropped it about the time of winter NAMM '09. I had ordered one in December of '08 and mine is probably one of the last . . . for now. I think that they need to make a MIM VI along the lines of a Classic Player Jag/Jazz and let the folks that want them have access at a lower price point. They aren't a primary instrument for most people and as such a MIM model hitting the street at $1,000 or so might just sell.

Well, I started a petition for Fender to reissue the Bass VI right on this very forum.

You can sign it here:
