I bought a Fender Urge bass from a guy that promised it worked great just to find when it was delivered that one of the Jazz pickups ans the PB pickups are dead. anyone have an idea what model and brand the pickups are to replace them? This is the original 1992 model not the Urge II.
Thanks
Siddacat

It's unlikely that the pickups are "dead". I bet you have a loose solder joint somewhere.

I recommend taking it to a good guitar tech before ordering pickups.

Thanks George I appreciate your response Had it on a techs bench and both pickups tested open. So now it's whether to have them rewound or replaced.

Wow - that's what I get for assuming.

That's rare in my experience - I wonder if someone was poking around under the pickguard with a screwdriver and broke the windings.

I can appreciate your predicament now - that's more complicated than just replacing pickups in a J or a P-bass.

Best of luck to you.

Yeah it's a bummer. I'm gonna try to keep it as original as I can. The guy that sold it to me was less then truthful

Hey siddacat, last night I went down to the basement and looked at my old Fender Frontline catalogs.

The oldest one I have is from 1997 and it showed the "Urge Standard Bass", made in Mexico. This one only had two Jazz pickups - no Precision pickup in the middle. I know that's different than your '92 model, but for whatever it's worth, it said it had "Standard Jazz Bass pickups", which were probably the same as the MIM Standard Jazz Bass of the time.

I have all the later Frontlines showing the Urge II with three "Noiseless" pickups.

I'm sure yours is the MIA Urge and therefore this info is of no help. If I were you, I'd just find some MIA pickups from an American Standard or American Series J and P bass and put them in but use the pickup covers that came with your bass so they still look the same externally. No one will be the wiser and you'll have genuine MIA Fender pickups which will sound just fine.

Also, try posting your question in the bass section of www.fenderforum.com. That forum gets WAY more traffic than this one and there might be some Urge owners there who know the whole story.

Another option is to email Stu Hamm and ask him what pickups were in the original Urge bass. You never know, he just might answer you. His website is www.stuarthamm.net. The only email address I could find there is webmaster@stuarthamm.net but there's a link to his MySpace site there also, which I can't see since I'm at work right now and MySpace is blocked here.

Again, good luck.
