--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

i have this same post in the p bass lounge but key things its kinda cheap im looking for my first pro bass and this is it i know mckagan has a black and white one and ive seen a cherry red and a olive green one but what other colors name and all if possible

ps i saw a you tube vid of a frettless one are those real or did he get a replacement neck or stripped it of fretts or what

ps ps the reason i come to u guys is because it is a jazz bass and i thought that u guys would know more about a jazz bass. im accuston to posting on the p bass fourm cause i love the body and the split coil just not the neck (i am 12 and have small hands) so this is the perfect combo for me the p bass split coil and the p bass the body plus the jazz bass neck. and for once google dosn't have the answer

thx guys u are the best

AND i see people say "1980's power jazz bass special" what does the power mean is there another 80's j bass special other than the "POWER" one im confused i thought there was only one help me out

There are a few versions of it. Lets go one by one. The FIRST version is the Fender P-J Bass. It is the same as the Duff bass, but the earliest were called that. It changed to Fender Jazz Bass Special within a year or so. They all had black necks front and back, and they all had a P and J pickup set up. They came in a few different colors. I am aware of black, red, green, silver, and pearl white. It is not a regular white. They change to a regular clear finish on the back of the neck after a couple of years, but typically an E7 decal will not be black-necked, and I would guess 87 is the cut off. Truth be told they really aren't a true Jazz bass, or a P bass as they were essentially Jazz necks on P bodies with the added J pup. So, very unique and probably why they did not take off until Duff used one.

The Power Jazz Bass Special is essentially the same bass but with two main differences - active electronics and a techno-silver burst finish on the headstock face. They too had black necks at first.

These were in the Fender Contemporary promo folder in the mid 80s, as they were part of the Contemporary series. Apparently these instruments were eventually available outside the US with clear finishes on the headstock face. There are fun variant of Strats and Teles to boot.
